Holyoke Canal and its Mills

The Holyoke Canal and its Mills will be a presentation at the Holyoke Media at 1 Court Square.  Topic is the Holyoke Canal System and its many mills.  Learn about the history and the function of the canal and also learn about the many paper and fabric mills.  Included are the Lyman Mills and the Springfield Blanket Company.  Funded by a state level grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.  This is one event in a project series called The Canals of the Connecticut River Valley.  There will be many other tours and presentations as part of the project.  Presenter is Robert Comeau of Historical Tours of Greater Holyoke.

Jumpstart Your Genealogy Class: May 1st, 8th, 15th Thursdays, 4:30 – 6:00 PM* Led by professional genealogist Hillary Schau. Two tours in one! Holyoke’s canals were key to making this planned industrial city. Join this easy 1- mile walking tour of the first and second level canals to discover how they were built and how they work. The walk culminates at Holyoke Gas & Electric’s Robert Barrett Fishway, where we join a Fishway Guide to take a tour of the powerhouse, the amazing fish lift and viewing room. Afterward, walk back to the park visitor center. Tours are free and open to the public. Meet at Holyoke Heritage State Park Visitor Center. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
