56th Annual Shad Derby

Robert E. Barrett Fishway Holyoke Dam 1 N Bridge St, Holyoke

Holyoke Gas & Electric’s Annual Shad Derby is a FREE event that invites the region's anglers to fish the waters of the Connecticut River in a contest to catch the largest shad. Contestants must bring their fish to the official weighing station located by the Robert E. Barrett Fishway, near the Route 116 Bridge. Official weighing is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Derby Days. Malcolm X Proclamation Signing

Mayor Joshua A. Garcia, Ward 4 City Councilor Kocayne Givner and a group of community members will mark the birthday of Malcolm X with a ceremony at City Hall on Friday, May 19. Mayor Garcia will read a proclamation honoring the life and mission of Malcolm X, an American Muslim minister and human rights activist prominent during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Assassinated in 1965, he remains a highly regarded figure within African-American and Muslim-American communities for his pursuit of racial justice. The Holyoke observance will be held in the Mayor’s Office starting at 2pm.
