56th Annual Shad Derby

Holyoke Gas & Electric’s Annual Shad Derby is a FREE event that invites the region's anglers to fish the waters of the Connecticut River in a contest to catch the largest shad. Contestants must bring their fish to the official weighing station located by the Robert E. Barrett Fishway, near the Route 116 Bridge. Official weighing is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Derby Days. Returning Migrant Bird Walk

For adults and teens. Migrant birds are now returning from various regions in the south. Join the park interpreter today, on World Migratory Bird Day, to search for birds on canals, trees, ground cover and riverside. Learn of the amazing distances they travel, difficulties they face, and how climate change is affecting them. Be ready to walk around Holyoke Heritage State Park and up to Pulaski Park. FREE TOUR: The Four Burial Grounds of South Hadley Center

Join Bob Comeau for a 1.5 mile tour of Four Burial Grounds located in South Hadley Center. Learn the fascinating history of the Old South Hadley Burial Ground, Evergreen Cemetery, John Preston's grave, and Mary Lyon's grave.  Many Holyokers have friends and family who are lying in rest across the Connecticut River.   Dress appropriately and wear comfortable shoes. Be prepared to be on your feet for at least 2 hours. Consider using bug spray. Park and meet in the back of Evergreen Cemetery. No need to print a ticket. Check in at the event.

Join tree expert, Tom Kass, for a free tour through the landscapes of Holyoke on the PVTA Trolley. You will have the unique opportunity to get up close and learn about the Cucumber tree, the Silverbell, Camperdown Elm, Sycamore, Aspen, Gingko and yes, the Redwood.  Holyoke resident and professional forester Tom Kass will lead a trolley tour of some of Holyoke’s notable trees.
