UnNatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? HCC Anthropology and Public Health and COVID-19 Class Presentations

Join us as Holyoke Community College students from Professor Martinez’s ANT 255 class titled UnNatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?  present their oral history projects.  Two teams gathered data for two projects – one, about the experience of Holyokers during the COVID-19 pandemic; and the other on how Holyoke living conditions impact health.  Students from – ANT 101: Cultural Anthropology and ANT 114: Understanding Diversity – also collected interviews with Holyoke residents and workers for both of these projects.

Animating the Museum: a Screening of Student Short Films

Students from Holyoke Community College’s Intro to Animation Course will be screening their short films inspired by the Wistariahurst Museum’s collection, architecture, and history. Come for a robbery at the frog bank, wandering ghosts, and marble rabbits come to life. Stay to celebrate these incredible budding animators. Refreshments will be provided.  Free and open to all.

NEVER TWENTY ONE Pays tribute to the young Black men who have been victims of gun violence in New York, Rio de Janeiro, and Johannesburg, who will never reach the age of 21. Three powerful dancers, torsos inscribed with testimonials from the victims’ families, recount the stories through movement.

Holyoke’s July 4th Fireworks Celebration will take place on Friday, June 30th with the rain date of Friday, July 7th on the beautiful grounds of Holyoke Community College, located on Homestead Avenue. Vendors interested in taking part in the event should contact the Parks and Recreation Department for a permit application at 413-322-5620. The City of Holyoke Fireworks are sponsored each year by Holyoke Gas & Electric and the event is hosted by Holyoke Community College. Free Documentary Screening: “Intelligent Lives”

Jazz Festival

The annual Holyoke Community College Jazz Festival returns for its 24th year on March 3 with bass player Avery Sharpe joining the Amherst Jazz Orchestra and members of the HCC jazz faculty for a big band concert. The show will begin at 8 p.m. in HCC's Leslie Phillips Theater in the Fine & Performing Arts building on the main HCC campus, 303 Homestead Ave. The concert is free for HCC students, faculty and staff, and $10 for the general public.
