OPEN/OPEN is a new, duet work that continues our five-year creative research into pregnancy and motherhood as/through choreography and performance. Our movement vocabulary begins in modes of interiority and porousness, drawing from our experiences of gestation, birth, and infant care. Through gestural sequences and poetic text we cast spells and crack images into myriad meanings. Our choreographic systems explore touch, unison, and repetition, alongside improvisational modes in which we inhabit choreography. Through these systems we manifest logics inherent in embryological development, the spiritual disorientation of matrescence, and the leaky, permeable body of motherhood. Electric blue wigs render us hyper-feminine, mythical monsters; an image we then work to deconstruct. Through an interplay of disorientation and rigor, our performance reveals essential mechanisms of vulnerability, care, perseverance and love.
