“The mills of Holyoke are among my favorite subject matter for painting. People may think these buildings are plain and lacking in warmth and color, but I find them anything but. Quite the contrary, I find the mills to be stately, powerful representations of so much of the city’s shared history.
Have you ever looked at the grandness of our mills? Every time I pass one, I see something different. It could be the shape of a window, the color of an entrance, the slope of the roofline, or the reflections in the canals. In painting these simple parts of our city, I think of the many waves of people who have come here to work in those mills and to make Holyoke their home. There was struggle; there was failure; there was success; there is beauty. ”
