SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Fans\, Fashion and Feminism
DESCRIPTION:Come view “Fans\, Fashion and Feminism” an exhibit that will reveal and demonstrate the secret language of the Victorian hand fan. \nWistariahurst Museum is delighted to announce that on April 21\, it will exhibit\, reveal\, and demonstrate the secret language of the Victorian hand fan. The event will feature an exhibit of beautifully crafted fans and a live demonstration of how “fan language” was used to communicate without speaking a word. \nAlthough hand fans were a “must-have” fashion accessory for women of the time\, they also marked the beginning of women’s determination to free themselves from the oppression of the patriarchy and the overzealous eyes of chaperones during the Victorian era. Attendees will learn how the simple hand fan helped energize women to pursue greater independence… walking without a male escort\, riding a bicycle\, redesigning fashion\, and demanding control of their everyday lives. \nA live demonstration of fan language will be held during the opening reception by historic performer Kandie Carle. What began as a simple cooling device evolved to a symbol of status and wealth\, then became an instrument of change to human relationships and social codes. Fans are a tangible record of art\, history\, and the ongoing connection among cultures. \nAbout the Curator \nDeborah Long is a volunteer at Wistariahurst and an enthusiastic participant in the museum’s events\, projects\, and ongoing activities. One project was to reconcile the linen closet’s contents with the inventoried list of items kept there. While examining each item in the various drawers and cupboards of the closet\, she discovered a collection of Victorian hand fans. Impressed by their beauty and curious about their use\, she explored the hand fan’s history and significance to women of that time. The “secret language of the hand fan” and its impact on changing the lives of women is a story she’d like to share with you on April 21\, 2026. \nThe fashions in this exhibit were curated by Joanne Picard and Elizabeth Wood. Picard and Wood are also Wistariahurst volunteers. \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Holyoke Local Cultural Council\, a local \nagency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:“Each Knuckle with Sugar”: A Reading & Conversation with Sarah Levine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Wistariahurst Museum for an evening with poet Sarah Levine\, whose collection Each Knuckle with Sugar received Poetry Honors in the Massachusetts Book Awards. This program will feature a reading from the collection\, followed by a conversation with the poet and an audience Q&A. Attendees are invited to engage with the poems and hear Levine speak about her creative process\, influences\, and the questions that shape her work. \nEach Knuckle with Sugar is a collection in which play becomes power at the turn of a page or a line. Sarah Levine’s endlessly inventive imagery offers readers a charged interiority through language that surprises\, delights\, and—at times—bares its teeth. The book’s lively wonder is driven by the interplay of grief\, love\, loss\, confusion\, and desire\, unfolding through an epistolary exchange between two recurring speakers\, Herman and Begonia. \nThis program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book. \nSARAH LEVINE is the author of Each Knuckle with Sugar\, winner of the Driftwood Press Open Reading Contest and a 2025 Massachusetts Book Awards Honors recipient in Poetry. She is also the author of the chapbooks Take Me Home and Her Man\, and her work has appeared in Poets & Writers\, The Paris American\, Passages North\, Green Mountains Review\, and the Best New Poets anthology\, among others. Levine teaches at Williston Northampton School and lives in Western Massachusetts.
