A Day in the Yoke’ is back this October 14th! A full day of events across the paper including Doors Open Holyoke, the Great Holyoke Brick Race, Pioneer Valley Makers Faire, and the Paper City Food Festival.

Doors Open Holyoke 9am-12pm

Doors Open 2023 is happening this October 14th from 9am till 12pm. Doors Open events across the country invite the public to see behind the doors of many places not usually open to the public. Doors Open connects residents and visitors to local places of historical, cultural, and architectural significance to bridge communities and inspire new and broader perspectives. The first Doors Open took place in France in 1984, and the concept has spread to other places in Europe, North America, and elsewhere. Holyoke is pleased to be celebrating our third annual Doors Open celebration!

Great Holyoke Brick Race 12pm-3pm

As the name implies, a “Brick Race” involves designing and building a brick race car that is cleverly mounted on wheels and raced down an inclined track using only gravity to cross the finish line. The Brick Race emphasizes creativity and the sculptural quality of the race cars as well as making the fastest machine to cross the finish line. Teams are encouraged.

Wistariahurst Plant Sale and Cemetery Tours

Cemetery Tours: Embark on a captivating journey with Wistariahurst as our volunteers embody the souls of Holyoke’s ancestors, guiding you along the winding pathways of Forestdale Cemetery. Amidst the solemn beauty of this resting ground, immerse yourself in the captivating tales of those departed, who once infused life into the heart of the city.

Journey alongside these dedicated volunteers, who don period costumes to breathe life into history. Amidst the monuments, markers, crypts, and crosses—each etched with stories waiting to be unraveled—absorb the captivating narratives that shaped the city’s history.

Discover the mystique of the 19th century, when death and its customs held unique significance. This ethereal exploration offers an intimate encounter with Holyoke’s vibrant heritage and the enduring spirits that continue to whisper through time. Join us for an immersive expedition—a delicate dance between the past and present—as we unveil the vibrant lives that now find solace beneath these hallowed grounds.

Plant Sale: Welcome to the Wistariahurst Plant Sale, where beauty blooms and history is preserved!

All of our plants are lovingly grown right here on our property, ensuring that they are acclimated to our unique climate and soil. By purchasing our plants, you’re not only getting a piece of Wistariahurst’s history, but also investing in the health and vibrancy of your own garden.

Our selection includes a wide variety of perennial favorites, such as delicate Bleeding Hearts, vibrant Primroses, and bold Daylilies. We also offer fragrant Catmint, towering Foxgloves, and many other unique and hard-to-find varieties.

Not only will these plants add color and texture to your garden, but all proceeds from the sale go towards helping to restore and upkeep our historical museum. So come on down and pick up a few plants – your garden will thank you and so will we!

A festival to celebrate invention and creativity with exhibits, workshops, vendors, food, fun, art, and makerspaces!
