SUMMARY:Karan Casey
DESCRIPTION:Karan Casey has been a force in Irish music for more than three decades. A masterful singer and storyteller\, she brings ballads\, love songs\, and powerful social-justice work into the present with clarity\, fire\, and heart. Her voice is unmistakable—tender\, commanding\, and rooted in tradition while always pushing into new territory. \nOver her expansive career\, she’s toured the world\, released eleven acclaimed albums\, and collaborated with artists ranging from James Taylor to Béla Fleck\, The Chieftains\, and Peggy Seeger. She’s also a founder of FairPlé\, the movement for gender equity in Irish traditional and folk music\, and continues to expand her artistry through theatre\, spoken word\, and original composition. \nHer latest album\, Nine Apples of Gold\, soared to No. 1 on the US Folk Radio charts and cemented her place as one of the most vital voices in contemporary folk. \nWe’re thrilled to welcome Karan Casey back to De la Luz on March 8. Karan was one of the first artists we had the honor to present when we first reopened in September\, 2024.  She returns just in time for St. Patrick’s season\, and we are so pleased to host her again. This show will be intimate\, moving\, and beautifully Irish.

DESCRIPTION:Mayor Joshua Garcia and state representatives honor the work of two Holyoke educators. \nWistariahurst is joining thousands of schools and organizations across the country to celebrate Civic Learning Week\, March 9–15. This event will kick off a series of upcoming events about our civic rights and responsibilities this year of celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. \nCivic education is essential to ensuring each and every person across this country is equipped with the necessary tools to engage as members of our self-governing society. \nThis Recognition Ceremony will honor the work of Holyoke educators Vanessa Martínez and Nicolas Cream. \nVanessa Martínez\, professor of anthropology at Holyoke Community College has taken the following steps to prioritize civic learning. Martínez encourages students to get involved in and advocate for their communities. Her academic work is rooted in cultural humility and teaches students how they can learn more about community \norganizations and use their skills to raise awareness and fundraise for community needs. \nNicholas Cream\, Ethnic Studies and history teacher at Dean Technical High School and president of the Holyoke Teachers Association has also encouraged civic learning and participation. Throughout his career\, Cream has taught his students about the importance of civic engagement. He has also advocated for teachers in his community\, striving to improve education in Holyoke. \nVisit Wistariahurst Museum on Monday\, March 9th at 10:30am to join local and state representatives in honoring these accomplished educators. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: "Liberty and Labor" Exhibit at Wistariahurst
DESCRIPTION:Wistariahurst Museum is celebrating the Fourth Annual Women’s History Month juried art showcase. This year\, the theme is women’s labor and community building efforts. An opening reception for this exhibit entitled Liberty and Labor will be held on March 10th\, 2026. \nLiberty and Labor includes the work of artists who identify as women or nonbinary. Historically\, Women’s labor has been undervalued and overlooked. Oftentimes\, the work women have done in areas such as homemaking\, community building\, and parenting\, has not even been viewed as work. Liberty and Labor highlights these efforts\, and others\, that showcase the hard work and dedication of women throughout history. From fiber art to painting\, and sculpture\, this exhibit includes a wide array of thought provoking pieces that connect with this theme. \nArtists featured in this exhibit include Jankaleishka Burgos Cruz\, Amy Crawley\, Campbell Lackey\, and Nancy Myrdal Carroll . There are also several other artists who have been awarded honorable mentions and will display their work as well. \nThe opening reception of Liberty and labor will be held Tuesday\, March 10th\, from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Wistariahurst is an artist-friendly space that encourages creativity and supports the growth of this region’s artists. Open Gallery Hours will be held from March 10th – April 7th on Mondays (10am-2pm) and Tuesdays (4:30pm-6:30pm)\, which will also be free and open to the public. We hope that you stop by and explore Liberty and Labor. \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Holyoke Local Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:If Not You\, Who? Getting Involved in Local Government
DESCRIPTION:Learn about getting involved in local government from Holyoke’s City Council President Tessa Murphy-R \nWistariahurst Museum is hosting a talk with Holyoke’s City Council President Tessa Murphy-Romboletti during Civic Learning week. Getting involved with your local city council is a way to engage with and be aware of what’s happening in your city. Residents from Holyoke and beyond can take away information about civic engagement from Murphy-Romboletti’s talk. Tessa Murphy-Romboletti is entering her third term as an At-Large Holyoke City Councilor and is currently serving her second term as Council President and is the first woman in the city’s history to hold the title. For seven years\, Tessa led EforAll/EparaTodos Pioneer Valley\, helping hundreds of local entrepreneurs—particularly women\, immigrants\, and under-represented founders—start and grow their small businesses. Before that\, she guided the SPARK Holyoke initiative through its transition to EforAll and previously worked for the City of Holyoke in both the Planning & Economic Development Department and the Mayor’s Office. Her dedication to community empowerment has been recognized repeatedly throughout her career. Born and raised in Holyoke\, Tessa is a proud graduate of the Holyoke Public Schools and earned her B.A. in history and sociology from the University of Delaware. She currently serves on the MassHire Holyoke Board of Directors and is an active member of the St. Patrick’s Parade Committee of Holyoke. \nHolyoke’ City Council holds hearings\, passes ordinances\, financial orders\, and resolutions\, as well as oversees city finances. Councilors also address resident concerns. City Council committees hold various duties including appointing municipal officers\, approving municipal budgets\, and approving laws. In her talk\, Murphy- Romboletti will offer information on the functions of Holyoke’s City Council and how residents can get involved. If Not You\, Who? Getting Involved in Local Government will occur Thursday\, March 13\, 2026 from 6:00-7:00pm at Wistariahurst Museum during Civic Learning Week. This annual\, nonpartisan awareness week brings together students\, educators\, policymakers\, and leaders in the public and private sectors to highlight and further energize the movement for civic education in states and communities across the nation. Si no eres tú\, ¿quién?

SUMMARY:Holyoke in the Flood of 1936
DESCRIPTION:Ninety years ago\, in March of 1936\, the Connecticut River overtopped the Holyoke Dam by seventeen feet\, reaching a record discharge of 244\,000 cfs.  The B&M Railroad tracks became impassable\, and the city—then home to about 55\,000 residents—sustained serious damage.  Author and emergency management professional Josh Shanley will speak about this disaster at the Holyoke Public Library on March 14 at 1:00 PM.   This historical lecture will describe the causes of\, impact of\, and recovery from the flood of ’36\, with particular focus on Holyoke and South Hadley.  As floods know no boundaries\, his talk will place the event in both historical and regional context.  Shanley’s emergency management background also allows him to share his insights into the potential impact of future floods in this area. \nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Story of Elizabeth "MumBet" Freeman
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the story of Elizabeth “MumBet” Freeman during this performance by Hidden Women Stage Company. \nWistariahurst Museum is excited to announce an upcoming performance sharing the story of Elizabeth “MumBet” Freeman in celebration of Massachusetts’ 250th anniversary. This historical interpretation from Freeman’s perspective will highlight her experiences and contribution to Massachusetts history. This event will be held Sunday\, March 15th during Civic Learning Week. \nElizabeth “MumBet” Freeman was the first enslaved African American to file and win a freedom suit in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling\, in Freeman’s favor\, found slavery to be inconsistent with the 1789 Massachusetts State Constitution. Her suit\, Brom and Bett v. Ashley (1781)\, was cited in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court appellate review of Quock Walker’s freedom suit. When the court upheld Walker’s freedom under the state’s constitution\, the ruling was considered to have implicitly ended slavery in Massachusetts. \nThis performance is being brought to Wistariahurst by Hidden Women Stage Company. Hidden Women helps historical sites tell the accurate and complete stories of the past\, ensuring all people’s narratives are represented and celebrated. Owner\, and Executive Artistic Director\, Tammy Denease\, is an accomplished Historian\, Artist\, and Storyteller passionate about amplifying the voices of those who have been overlooked by history. \nImmerse yourself in the story of Elizabeth “MumBet” Freeman and learn how she made history. Join Tammy Denease of Hidden Women Stage Company on Sunday\, March 15th\, 2026 from 1:00-2:00pm at Wistariahurst Museum. Tickets will be available on Wistariahurst’s Eventbrite page. Sliding scale admission is offered for this event\, with tickets ranging from $0 – $15. This program is funded in part by a grant from the Holyoke Local Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. Su demanda\, Brom and Bett v.

SUMMARY:Beginning Your Spiritual Journey
DESCRIPTION:Every spiritual path begins with a single step… but it is the foundation of those steps that determines how far you can go. Beginning Your Spiritual Journey is a twelve-week Live In-Person immersive course designed to give you the tools\, practices\, and wisdom to start safely\, clearly\, and with confidence. Over the span of three months\, you will learn how to ground and protect your energy\, clear your field\, and strengthen your spiritual awareness. Week by week\, you’ll discover how to work with the elements of Earth\, Water\, Fire\, and Air; awaken the chakras and understand their role in your wellbeing; and practice seeing auras\, connecting with guides\, and sensing energy in yourself and others. With every session\, you will experience your growth in real time\, noticing how much stronger\, steadier\, and more open your energy becomes. This is not theory alone. You will be given practical exercises: feeling and moving energy in your hands\, using breathwork to balance the elements\, learning to sense truth from falsehood\, practicing psychometry\, and even exploring the four directions and their sacred teachings. We will weave together grounding\, natural law\, compassion\, and spiritual hygiene so that your journey begins from a place of strength. By the end of the twelve weeks\, you will have a living road map to continue your path; one that includes protection practices\, a deeper understanding of your own aura and chakras\, connection with spirit guides\, and a foundation of natural law and compassion to guide you. This course is perfect for those at the beginning of their spiritual awakening\, as well as anyone who has explored before but longs for a stronger\, safer\, more heart-centered foundation. “Early Bird” Coupon Code upon checkout to save $25 if you sign up by Feb 28! DESCRIPTION:Join Genuine Culture\, LLC for a high-energy\, live music celebration honoring the powerhouse women whose voices defined the golden era of house music. This electrifying concert experience will feature a live band led by Drummer extraordinaire Dwayne Keith and a lineup of dynamic female vocalists performing iconic dance floor anthems made famous by artists such as CeCe Peniston\, Robin S\, Crystal Waters\, Martha Wash\, Inner City\, Corona\, and Black Box. \nRooted in the cultural legacy of house music — a genre born from Black\, Latinx\, and LGBTQ+ communities in the 1980s — Ladies First highlights the art form’s deep connection to freedom\, empowerment\, inclusivity\, and self-expression.
