DESCRIPTION:Do you have Franco American heritage of Québec or Acadien (Maritime Provinces) origin? Join Jeanne Douillard as she presents a unique approach to a relatively unknown tale. In her talk\, “Silent Presence The French in New England\,” she weaves together her personal narrative with the historical story\, attempting in its essence to get at the heart of a people. She believes the past is important. “We are the heirs of our ancestors’ journeys. History matters. It shapes us. We carry these stories within us even if the narrative has been lost to us\,” she says. The results of her research and personal reflections offer unique insights into the story of an “invisible” people. With compassion and understanding\, she unravels a long and complex history in an attempt to make it understandable for all. Even if you are not French\, you are sure to gain a greater understanding of American history. \nJeanne Douillard is an independent scholar specializing in the story of the French in the Americas. She is one of the major contributors to the book Building a Better Life – The French-Canadians in Western Massachusetts published by the Republican newspaper in Springfield\, MA. Her narrative poem\, Not So Much The Same Place\, is found in the anthology\, Heliotrope and a recently published poem\, pain\, can be found in the online publication\, Résonance. And finally\, Jeanne has published her own book under the auspices of Swamp Press of Northfield\, MA. \nIn her book\, I Remember… Je Me Souviens… she presents in greater detail the story of the French in the Americas. She also shares the story of her travels to France in 2014 and 2015 when she and her husband\, Armand Proulx went off in search of their ancestral villages. There will be a book signing after her talk. \n¿Tienes ascendencia francoamericana de origen quebequés o acadio (provincias marítimas)? DESCRIPTION:Wistariahurst Museum is thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibit this October\, Identity in Ink: The Art of Tattooing. Despite its more modern surge in interest\, the art of tattooing is one of the ancient traditions in human history. Etching pictures and symbols into skin has been around for thousands of years and has held countless meanings throughout different cultures and times. Greeks\, ancient nomads\, ancient Egyptians\, Indigenous peoples\, and many other communities have utilized tattoos to highlight their identity. Some are still rooted in tradition and rituals\, but tattoos have evolved into powerful symbols of self-expression\, storytelling\, and identity. \nTattoo artists or apprentices from all backgrounds submitted work that is shaped by heritage\, lived experiences\, and personal history. From tattooed skin to art pieces\, these works draw on traditional methods\, incorporate powerful symbolism\, or push boundaries with modern design. Artists featured in this exhibit are Caitlyn Abdow\, Jennifer Broy-Peters\, Kenzie Lee\, Kevin Stiles\, Kire Franklin\, Mo Jiwun\, Soul L\, and more! You will see photos of their work as a career artist\, but also their artistry outside of that medium. \nIdentity in Ink: The Art of Tattooing will run from October 7th to November 11th\, 2025. Open gallery hours for this exhibit will be on Mondays (10am-2pm) and Tuesdays (4:30pm-6:30pm). These gallery hours are open and free to the public\, so that all of our community members can stop by to explore this exhibit\, discover unique artistry\, and engage with educational information surrounding the history of tattoos.

Her curls have thinned\, her little hands are often wrapped in tape\, and yet—she still twirls in princess dresses and insists on painting with bright colors. ? \nAt only four years old\, Gracie has endured more than any child should. The treatments are painful\, the hospital stays long\, and the financial strain overwhelming. DESCRIPTION:The Magic For Maddie event is on October 18th\, 2025 at Ashley Reservoir / Holyoke Elks.\nJoin us to celebrate and honor Maddie as well as raise funds to fuel research for pediatric brain cancer and support local families in the fight. \nMagic For Maddie is a 501c3 organization that was created in honor of Maddie Schmidt.  After a 10 month heroic battle\, Madeline O’Hare Schmidt gained her angel wings on Saturday\, December 31\, 2022. Maddie was born on October 14\, 2014\, the beautiful baby girl to Gregory Michael Schmidt & Nora Christine (O’Hare) Schmidt of Southampton\, MA. Completing her family\, she joined the best two big brothers William Roy & Patrick John. During her far too short time in this world\, Maddie inspired all who were lucky enough to know her with her kind heart. She was often silly\, at times sassy\, smart\, compassionate\, generous and simply the happiest and bravest little girl. As the youngest sister and cousin on both sides\, Maddie was incredibly wise beyond her years and brought her one of a kind charm and grace to everything she did. Maddie loved playing soccer\, gymnastics and softball and would be the first to tell you how she was voted President of her Kindergarten class at the William E. Norris School. She loved riding her bike\, scooter and skateboard around the neighborhood\, swimming\, tik-tok-ing\, slime & art projects\, often surprising those she loved with her beautiful works of art. She also loved games\, although you had to watch her closely because at times she could be found sneaking a card or two up her sleeve. She was known for giving the best hugs that would always make any day all the brighter. Maddie had so much fun traveling to Marco Island and Disney World with her entire family\, including the trip of a lifetime after she was diagnosed. Most of all\, Maddie loved spending time with her family at Lake Sunapee. In the winters she would bomb down the ski hills and splash in the hot tub. Summers were spent tubing\, knee boarding\, paddle boarding\, jumping off the dock\, fishing\, chasing sunsets and notoriously watching her own fireworks shows that seemed to get bigger each year. It was at Lake Sunapee that Maddie completed her first 5K and inspired the idea behind Magic for Maddie. Maddie’s family will be forever grateful for the community that rallied behind Maddie at this event and throughout her fight against DIPG\, a rare form of pediatric brain cancer. \n

Whether she is writing about understanding one’s intuition and inner beauty or the cyclical violence of anti-Blackness and sexism\, Madison explores how to get free and how to care for oneself along the way. \nIn this\, Madison works at the intersection of artistry and community building. She often looks back and honors a Black music canon while creating her own unique style\, utilizing her voice as a central instrument and drawing upon lifelong inspirations like Stevie Wonder\, Aretha Franklin\, Erykah Badu\, Pharell\, Missy Elliot\, and the Spice Girls. She is in community with other artists\, cultural workers\, and activists\, and has been able to prioritize the work of women and POC in her curatorial tenures at venues like C’mon Everybody\, the WNYC Greene Space and the BRIC Jazz festival.
