SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Blooms - Lora Barrett at Wistariahurst Museum
DESCRIPTION:During the month of September Wistariahurst Museum’s great hall will be filled with florals as we welcome in “Blooms”\, an art exhibit by painter Lora Barrett. This exhibit will feature 99 vibrant paintings of flowers of varying sizes. An avid gardener\, Lora Barrett maintains her gardens as a reference and muse for her highly colored paintings\, pushing the vibrancy of the flowers to the limit. Wistariahurst Museum will be hosting a solo show of 99 of her floral paintings from September 2-25\, 2025.  \nBarrett’s artistic journey began with a childhood marked by curiosity and a passion for art. This passion was fueled by supportive parents and teachers. She carried her passion for the arts into her adulthood as she majored in Art at The College of Our Lady of the Elms and began teaching Art in Holyoke upon graduation. While teaching in Holyoke\, she continued her studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, where she earned a Doctorate in Education and later taught Art Education at the University. Barrett has received several awards throughout her life for her artwork and for her work in arts education. She has continued her education at Cape Cod School of Art\, the Chatham Creative Arts Center\, the En Plein Air Art School in France\, and Snow Farm\, among others.  \nBarrett’s work has been shown in several galleries across the region\, and Wistariahurst is excited to have her work in our halls once more. Her paintings are in personal collections in France\, Canada\, Mexico\, Italy\, England\, and Ireland and in the permanent collection of the United States Federal Reserve in Washington\, DC.  \nThe opening reception of  “Blooms” will be held Tuesday\, September 2 from 4:30-7:00pm. Open Gallery Hours will be held on Mondays (10am-2pm) and Tuesdays (4:30pm-6:30pm) through September 25th\, which will also be free and open to the public. The exhibit will also be on view during Wistariahurst’s Sunday Fundays and other public events through September 25th. Barrett will be hosting some events corresponding with her exhibit at Wistariahurst. Saturday\, September 6th from 10:00am-1:00pm will be Painting in the Garden with Lora Barrett. Paint in the Wisty Gardens with Lora\, or just come to watch as she demonstrates her craft. Some easels will be provided\, but artists should bring their own art supplies. There will also be an artists talk on Tuesday\, September 9th\, 5:30- 6:30pm where Lora will discuss the making of Blooms. We hope that you stop by and explore Lora Barrett’s Blooms.  \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Holyoke Local Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:Dustbowl Revival - Lush Sonic Layers\, Gorgeous Vocal Harmonies\, and Infectious Tunes
DESCRIPTION:How do you describe genre-defying roots music adventurers Dustbowl Revival? Even tireless founder and lead songwriter Z. Lupetin would agree you have to come to a show to find out. Going strong into their second decade after starting from a humble Craigslist ad posted in bohemian Venice Beach\, some would say Dustbowl’s ever-evolving collective (there have been nearly thirty members!) plays a spicy cocktail of folky-funk or booty-shaking jangly rock n’ soul: expertly mixing their New Orleans-tinted brass section with their signature Laurel Canyon harmonies and fearless lyrics. \nWhile most bands stay in one lane or fade away quickly\, Dustbowl Revival is a testament to building a fanbase and their own sound the old-fashioned way\, with hard work and moving songs that stick to your bones when you leave the concert. There’s a reason they continue to get written up in Rolling Stone and Billboard and get played on AAA radio 16 years after they set sail. \nAfter releasing seven acclaimed albums starting in 2008\, including their beloved live record With A Lampshade On (2015) recorded mostly at their LA homebase the famed Troubadour\, and their charting self-titled record (2017) produced by Grammy-winner Ted Hutt (Flogging Molly\, Old Crow Medicine Show)\, perhaps their magnum opus is 2020’s deeply personal Is It You\, Is It Me – produced by Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive\, Josh Ritter). It showcases their penchant for orchestral brass and intricate string work with politically-charged story-songs that unfold like mini-movies. It’s not surprising that Z. Lupetin was an award-winning playwright and screenwriter before music took the reins. “Get Rid Of You”\, an ode to the courageous kids in Parkland\, FL who stood up to demand common-sense control laws be passed is a heart-wrenching staple of each show.

SUMMARY:Kassa Overall
DESCRIPTION:If you’re trying to understand the future of jazz\, turn your attention to Kassa Overall. Revered by living legends and underground tastemakers\, Kassa is a drummer\, rapper\, and producer who fuses avant-garde jazz with the urgency of hip-hop and the experimental edge of underground electronica. His music tackles modern life with wit and intensity\, and his live shows are a whirlwind—spontaneous\, virtuosic\, and impossible to categorize. \nThis September\, Kassa brings his singular vision to De la Luz Soundstage. If you care about where jazz is going next—or just want to catch a rising star at full velocity—this is the one to see.

SUMMARY:Skye Consort & Emma Björling
DESCRIPTION:“Lots of groups combine elements of music from Scandinavia\, Ireland\, Scotland\, England\, and French Canada. None of them do it like Skye Consort.” ~ The Berkshire Edge \nRecipients of the prestigious Opus Award for 2019 Album of the Year with their debut (World music and Traditional Québec music)\, Skye Consort & Emma Björling perform trans-Atlantic chamber folk arrangements of songs and tunes from Sweden\, Norway\, Ireland\, Scotland\, England\, Québec\, Acadia\, the USA\, as well as original compositions. Each musician brings their own individual interpretation to these traditions to create an extraordinary collaboration\, consisting of voices\, fiddle\, nyckelharpa\, cello\, bouzouki\, banjo\, and percussion. Together they produce an assortment of whirling polskas\, moving reels\, passionate love songs\, and breathtaking hymns and songs. \nThe release of their second album\, Ode & Ballade\, released in 2024 has sent them touring the globe once again across North America and Scandinavia\, selling out venues and making new friends and fans wherever they go. This acclaimed album comprises stories of medieval saints and sacred wells\, fair maidens outsmarting presumptuous knights\, beautiful or boisterous drinking songs\, thieves meeting their fate\, heartbreaking love songs\, and groovy dance tunes. CBC Music\, Robert Rowat gave this advice: “If you’re lucky enough to have a cottage to escape to when the warm weather hits\, take this album with you.” And Leslie Barcza wrote: “I think it speaks for itself\, the musicianship\, the powerful invocation of times gone by. The whole CD is magical like that\, sometimes in Swedish sometimes French\, sometimes English.”

SUMMARY:Mary Halvorson: Amaryllis
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson brings her groundbreaking Amaryllis project to De la Luz Soundstage for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of avant-garde jazz and chamber music fusion. Halvorson’s exceptional sextet features an all-star lineup of Adam O’Farrill on trumpet\, Jacob Garchik on trombone\, Patricia Brennan on vibraphone\, Nick Dunston on bass\, and Tomas Fujiwara on drums. Together\, they’ll perform compositions from her newly released album\, showcasing Halvorson’s unique approach to composition that seamlessly blends structured arrangements with moments of thrilling improvisation. \nThe guitarist and composer has been described as “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs\, JazzTimes)\, ”NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel\, City Arts)\, “one of the most original jazz guitarists of our time” (Peter Margasak\, Bandcamp Daily)\, and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis\, Village Voice). In recent Downbeat Critics Polls Halvorson has been celebrated as guitarist\, rising star jazz artist\, and rising star composer of the year\, and in 2019 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. \nThe De la Luz Soundstage\, with its intimate atmosphere and exceptional acoustics\, provides the perfect setting for audiences to experience Halvorson’s intricate musical tapestries up close. Listeners can expect to be transported through a range of sonic landscapes—from delicate\, lyrical passages reminiscent of contemporary classical music to explosive\, free-form explorations that highlight the ensemble’s remarkable chemistry and technical prowess.
