SUMMARY:Mother's Day Market at Wistariahurst Museum
DESCRIPTION:Soak up the sun and shop for gifts and goodies for mom- or yourself!  Wistariahurst Museum welcomes spring with our second annual Mother’s Day Market being held Saturday\, May 3rd\, 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Our Mother’s Day Market features local vendors selling a variety of products such as art\, jewelry\, food\, and other amazing items. Vendors will be stationed outdoors in Wistariahurst’s gardens\, weather permitting. If the April showers trickle into May\, then vendors will be located indoors throughout the first floor of the museum. Guests are welcome inside the Carriage house as well\, where they can shop our gift shop\, take photos in the carriage\, and view the frog circus. The fun doesn’t stop there! Wander around the first floor of the museum for special Mother’s Day activities and games! \nWistariahurst’s gardeners will also be hosting the first On-Site Plant Sale of the year during the market this year from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. Pre-ordering for plants by Wednesday\, April 30th\, is required to pick up your plants during the market. Otherwise\, visitors are welcome to order plants during the market to be picked up at a later date. Proceeds from purchases made from our plant sale or gift shop purchases go towards funding for future programs that you will see at Wistariahurst Museum\, so you can support your local museum while buying a sweet gift for your special someone. \nWistariahurst Museum’s 2nd annual Mother’s Day Market offers something for everyone. From textile pieces and prints\, to candles and crystals- you’re bound to find something your parent will love. We’re excited to welcome the public to enjoy the array of local vendors\, explore the grounds\, and shop for plants for you and your mother’s garden. Best of all\, this event is admission-free and open to the public\, so that all can celebrate their beloved maternal figures.

SUMMARY:2025 Flywheel Zine Fest
DESCRIPTION:The Flywheel ZineFest returns for another year at the Holyoke Senior Center. Come see dozens of amazing artists and zine creators from throughout the northeast. \nWhat’s a zine? A zine (ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group\, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. A fanzine (blend of fan and magazine) is a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon (such as a literary or musical genre) for the pleasure of others who share their interest. The term was coined in an October 1940 science fiction fanzine by Russ Chauvenet and popularized within science fiction fandom\, entering the Oxford English Dictionary in 1949.

SUMMARY:Soil Analysis\, Carbon Sampling and Designing for Resilience / Análisis de Suelos\, Muestreo de Carbono y Diseño para la Resiliencia
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, participants will learn how to accurately sample soils for comprehensive chemical analysis\, including soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrient profiles. We will analyze in situ the biological\, physical and chemical properties of soils\, including compaction\, infiltration rate\, soil texture and structure\, surface biology\, soil aggregate stability\, root behavior\, soil temperature and bulk density. This integrated approach provides a thorough understanding of soil health by combining quantitative data with qualitative observations. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn about Landscape Interactions’ collaboration with Nuestras Raíces to transform a portion of their working landscape into a refugia for at-risk native bees\, butterflies and moths through the incorporation of biodiverse\, perennial and productive native plant communities.

SUMMARY:LightHouse 10 Year Celebration
DESCRIPTION:For ten remarkable years\, LightHouse has stood as a beacon of hope\, innovation\, and possibility. We’ve reimagined educational pathways\, centered young people’s voices\, and created spaces where those who didn’t thrive in traditional systems could find belonging\, purpose\, and new routes to their futures. \nFor 10 years we’ve boldly offered a new way to school\, and we’re continuing to expand our vision to serve more. \nJoin us for our 10th Anniversary\, a celebration of our first decade and a rallying cry for the work ahead. The evening begins with an open house at 5PM where you can explore our campus and see what school looks like in our new facility. We then gather in De la Luz\, our performing arts venue\, at 6PM to enjoy light bites prepared with help from our very own culinary students. The program begins at 6:45 and culminates in a concert with Fabiola Méndez\, an Emmy-nominated composer known for her unique blend of genres\, including folk\, jazz\, and Afro-Caribbean influences. Much like the LightHouse community\, her music reflects a wide range of identities\, cultures\, and roots. \nThanks to our sponsors\, including Peoples Bank\, Bueno y Sano\, and Lumber Dog\, this event is free to attend. Guests will be asked to make a meaningful gift to support this work.

SUMMARY:Mountain Park – A talk with Jay Ducharme
DESCRIPTION:Following its opening in 1894 as a picturesque retreat on the side of Mount Tom\, Mountain Park evolved into one of the most beloved amusement parks in New England. At the beginning of the 20th century\, Holyoke was the most prosperous community in the state and one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States. The city’s progress drew crowds of visitors to Mountain Park\, and the park gradually developed into a bustling destination. Although the park closed its gates in 1987\, the echoes of laughter from generations of visitors still reverberate throughout the Pioneer Valley. \nJay Ducharme worked at Mountain Park for over a decade\, just as his father before him\, and has spent much of his life preserving and sharing the history of the park. He is a member of the board of directors for the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round\, the only part of Mountain Park that has remained in the city. The rarely seen images and videos in this presentation have been gathered from the collections of the Holyoke Public Library\, Wistariahurst Museum\, local newspapers\, and residents.  Sponsored by the Holyoke History Room.  Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Inside Reading at Wistariahurst
DESCRIPTION:Voices from the Inside (VFI)  engages women and girls who have been incarcerated or who are at risk of incarceration through writing. The organization encourages these writers to find their voices and cultivate leadership through creative writing workshops. VFI’s work lies in core principles: “everyone has a strong unique voice; everyone is born with creative genius; writing as an art form belongs to all people\, regardless of economic class or educational level; the teaching of craft can be done without damage to a writer’s original voice or artistic self-esteem and; a writer is someone who writes.” VFI also encourages their participants to share their work in presentations\, conversations\, and performances as part of their Voices Carry initiative. Wistariahurst Museum is excited to host one of these presentations. The Voices from the Inside reading at Wistariahurst will be held Saturday\, May 17\, 1:00-2:00.

SUMMARY:The Saga of New-Gate
DESCRIPTION:East Granby Connecticut’s Old New-Gate Prison will be presenting while Prison Reimagined is on view. The Saga of New-Gate\, hosted by Old New-Gate Prison’s Curator\, Morgan Bengel will dig into the tumultuous beginnings of the prison and the experimental way our criminal justice system was established. Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine is recognized as our Nation’s first chartered Copper Mine (1707) and First State Prison (1773). “Those distinctions did not come without trials and tribulations..” says Bengel. “Countless prison escapes lend themselves to a dramatic story\, with meaningful impact for our State and National history.” The Saga of New-Gate will be held Sunday\, May 25th at 12:30pm at Wistariahurst. This event is sponsored by Old New-Gate Prison and the Holyoke Local Cultural Council.
