DESCRIPTION:Wistariahurst Museum is celebrating the Third Annual Women’s History Month juried art showcase. This year\, the theme is Love\, in all forms. An opening reception will be held on March 13\, 2025. “Love\, in all forms” is an array of artwork of varying mediums that analyzes how love impacts our lives. SUMMARY:Where We Live: A Sense of Place Story and Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In an ever-changing world\, our sense of place—our connection to the landscapes\, communities\, and histories that shape us—offers a foundation for well-being\, belonging\, and stewardship. Research shows that strong place connections enhance mental health\, reduce stress\, and foster a sense of meaning in our lives. Communities rooted in a shared sense of place are more resilient\, fostering understanding\, cooperation\, and a deeper appreciation for cultural and natural heritage. When we feel connected to a place\, we are more likely to care for it\, ensuring its stories\, landscapes\, and ecosystems endure for future generations. \nThis 90-minute workshop invites writers of all levels to craft vivid\, sensory-rich stories\, poems\, or songs inspired by personal experiences with place. Through guided prompts and conversation\, you’ll uncover fresh perspectives and creative sparks to enrich your writing and deepen your connection to yourself and where you live. \nSense of Place & Story Writing is for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned writer or just beginning. Using simple\, sensory-rich prompts\, you’ll unlock vivid descriptions\, authentic emotions\, and compelling narratives that can shape stories\, poems\, songs\, and more. Guided by Erica Wheeler\, you’ll follow a step-by-step process to tap into the power of place through writing. SUMMARY:More Love Dance Party with DJ Theory
DESCRIPTION:We’re leaning into 2025 with a higher call: more inclusivity and diversity and movement. A new global dance night exploring the past\, present and future of dance music across a broadening spectrum of genres — from disco to dembow\, afrobeats to amapiano — an expanding palette of sounds\, beats\, and languages. This is the launch party. \nPRINCE OF QUEENS\, Felipe Quiroz\, is a Colombian-born\, NYC-raised producer\, DJ\, and multi-instrumentalist blending the city’s trans-Caribbean energy into a fresh sonic identity. His sound fuses deep house and techno with tropical disco\, cumbia\, and merengue — a unique take on underground dance music through the lens of a Colombian immigrant. With his latest EP Merida on Brooklyn’s Razor-N-Tape\, POQ invites you to a dance floor where vintage tropical vibes meet modular synths. Prince of Queens has held residencies at Brooklyn’s Black Flamingo\, Jupiter Disco\, with his “Tropical Past and Future” party. He’s also played iconic venues and clubs including Central Park SummerStage\, Public Records\, Good Room and many more. \nDEEJAY THEORY (ORIGINAL TING MUSIC\, MA)\, a New England native by way of San Francisco\, has been swimming in international musical waters for most of his adult life. While out West\, he co-founded and hosted TORMENTA TROPICAL\, a decade-long dance party in SF’s Mission district. His in-demand DJ sets diffuse a multiplicity of genres with careful craftsmanship\, exquisitely blended with near-zero turbulence and maximal groove. \nTickets are $20. Secret Planet tokens accepted (2-for-1 for our SP members if they arrive before 9PM!). There is a full bar and the cafe will be open serving delicious snacks throughout the night.

SUMMARY:The Holyoke Public Schools and the Tax Override Vote of 1991
DESCRIPTION:UMass professor Kathryn McDermott and Willow Kwak explore the 1991 tax override votes\, part of a tumultuous period in Holyoke politics. McDermott and Kwak conclude that the repeated\, unsuccessful efforts to pass a Proposition 2 ½ override for the schools were a turning point in the relationship between Holyoke and the state\, which eventually led to more state funds for Holyoke and other cities\, but also to school receivership. This is the first time McDermott has presented her research to a Holyoke audience. \nKatie McDermott is on the faculty of the School of Public Policy and the College of Education at UMass Amherst and teaches courses about politics\, public education\, and policy analysis. Willow Kwak is a recent graduate of Northfield Mount Hermon and plans to attend Harvard University in the fall.

SUMMARY:Bab L' Bluz
DESCRIPTION:Bab L’ Bluz (literally “The door of the Blues”) are reclaiming the blues for North Africa. Fronted by an African-Moroccan woman in a traditionally male role\, the band are devoted to a revolution in attitude which dovetails with Morocco’s ‘nayda’ youth movement – a new wave of artists and musicians taking their cues from local heritage\, singing words of freedom in the Moroccan-Arabic dialect of darija. Ancient and current\, funky and rhythmic\, buoyed by Arabic lyrics\, soaring vocals and bass-heavy grooves\, Nayda! seems to pulse from the heart of the Maghreb. \nArmed with their electric guembris\, Bab L’ Bluz resonates a mixture of Gnawa trance  rhythms\, Hassani songs from southern Morocco and Chaabi polyrhythms\, propelling their  music into the magnetic fields of psychedelic rock and volutes of incense.  Led by a woman doukkalia\, the group wants to carry a revolution of attitude being part of  the movement of the Moroccan youth “Nayda”\, a new wave of artists and committed  musicians who are inspired by the local heritage and sing texts of freedom in the Moroccan Arabic dialect\, the darija. \nVery active since its creation\, the power quartet travels the globe to distill its hypnotic riffs  and spread its mystical and liberating headbanging frenzy to its audience – a true signature  of the group. \nPoetic and powerful\, Bab L’ Bluz is an expanding universe\, a sonic territory that transcends  boundaries. \nIn 2020\, Bab L’ Bluz made a stunning entrance on the music scene with the album Nayda!  Mojo Top 10 world Album of the year\, Songlines Best albums of 2020\, The New York Times\,  Vogue Arabia\, BBC\, Le Monde\, Financial Time\, Pan African Music\, Uncut\, Radio Nova or Arte  Concert… \nIn 2021\, Bab L’ Bluz won his first Songlines Music Awards and then began a world tour which  is still ongoing (Europe\, Africa\, America\, Oceania). \nAfter almost constant touring the band released their second album ‘Swaken’ in May 2024\,  to more critical acclaim. The album’s eleven tracks spark and pulse with kinetic\, pedal-to the-metal energy and takes the listener to a place that shakes us up\, to bring us peace.

SUMMARY:Knock Knock! - Photography Exhibit by Jeffery Richard - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Knock\, Knock! Photographer Jeffrey Richard opens the door to exploration and creativity in his exhibit of urban photographs. Jeffrey Richard is a Holyoke native who has always been inspired by the visual aspects of the world and city around him.Richard’s work explores urban decay and highlights abandoned buildings\, alleys\, and entryways. Though Richards has photographed several places during his travels\, he has returned to Holyoke to take photos of this “always-changing city”\, as he describes it. \n“Knock Knock!” is a collection of photographic images transformed into 3D framed artwork of doors and entryways from Holyoke and beyond. Richard explains the inspiration behind the 3D pop-out frames is to “give depth drawing the viewer into the image\, creating a connection to its space and timelessness.” \n“Knock Knock!” is on view at Wistariahurst Museum beginning April 28th\, through May 20th\, 2025. An opening reception will be held Tuesday\, April 29th from 4:30-6:30pm. This reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on view during gallery hours Mondays 10:00am-2:00pm\, and Tuesdays 4:30-6:30pm. We hope to see you come through our doors to experience “Knock Knock!” \n¡Toc\, toc!
