SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Mehrnoush Bouzarjmehr at the ARTery
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, March 1st 12pm-3pm at the Artery\, 289 High St in Holyoke for an afternoon of dazzling skill and beauty in the work of Mehrnoush Bouzarjmehr. \nBorn in Iran\, though she grew up immersed in art\, Bouzarjmehr spent 20 years working in Iran’s delivery rooms as a Midwife\, BSC\, witnessing the very first cries of thousands of newborns and the tears and smiles of mothers as they embraced their babies for the first time. \nIn 2017 she immigrated to the United States and began painting her dreams once again on wood and canvas. Since 2000\, she has been deeply involved in painting\, exploring various techniques such as chalk pastel\, oil paint\, acrylic\, gouache\, watercolor\, fabric paint\, and markers. She has also studied traditional Persian styles like Tazhib (Illumination)\, Gol-o-Morgh (Bird and Flower)\, and ancient Persian tile patterns. \nNow\, her creations reside in the heart of Holyoke\, a city full of beauty and soul\, where each piece continues to share its story and emotions\, waiting to find a new home where it can tell its own tale. \nHer work will be on display thru the month of March\, gallery hours are Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Glen David Andrews at De la Luz Soundstage
DESCRIPTION:Cafe opens for dinner at 6:00. Show begins at 7:00. \nJoin us for a Mardi Gras celebration where New Orleans brass meets culinary magic\, featuring the electrifying “Treme Prince” himself\, Glen David Andrews. Experience a vibrant evening where the raw\, soulful energy of traditional jazz intertwines with a curated menu inspired by Louisiana’s rich culinary heritage. Each bite—from spicy gumbo to crispy shrimp po’ boy—will be perfectly orchestrated to complement the band’s brass-powered rhythms\, creating an unforgettable celebration for Mardi Gras. \nGlen David Andrews\, a native son and a beloved musician of New Orleans\, is a warrior for cultural preservation at a time when indigenous traditions are being threatened in the city. \nHis commanding voice and fierce trombone sound – both a powerful\, emotional\, and resonant blend of smoothness and grit – as well as his disarmingly honest manner provide a musical experience that never fails to meet the moment. \nGlen’s music is packed with beauty\, hard-earned truths\, compassion\, humor\, anger\, joy\, and – most of all – hope. \nGlen comes from a storied and extended family of musicians. He was born in New Orleans’ historic Tremé neighborhood\, which many consider to be the oldest Black community in the United States. Transfixed by the magic and mystery of the city’s second-line parades\, Andrews and his older brother\, Derrick Tabb of the Rebirth Brass Band\, along with their younger cousin Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews\, learned the history of the brass band tradition firsthand from iconic figures like Tuba Fats.

His wonderful voice touched the hearts and souls of those fortunate enough to be present when he accompanied karaoke or a band. \nLaughter\, friendship\, and  Ray’s smile will live forever within the confines of his beloved post. \nPlease join us on this special day. \nHours will be 5-10 PM with a free buffet at 6 PM. From 7 to 10 music will be provided by the Dead Heads. Bring your memories and stories of Ray to share on this this special day.

SUMMARY:Reverie Road at De la Luz Soundstage
DESCRIPTION:Cafe opens for dinner at 6:00. Show begins at 7:00. \nReverie Road is a genre-defying Celtic powerhouse ensemble\, uniting founding Solas members Winifred Horan (fiddle) and John Williams (accordion) with former Gaelic Storm fiddler Katie Grennan and Steinway Artist Jazz and Raga pianist Utsav Lal. Together\, these four exceptional musicians are celebrated as some of today’s most accomplished traditional and virtuosic folk artists\, captivating audiences worldwide from stages to studios for over three decades. \nReverie Road takes the rich tapestry of Irish music and weaves it into a cinematic experience\, full of expressivity and sophistication. Their performances push the boundaries of tradition\, offering stunningly innovative interpretations that retain the heart of the genre while embracing a modern twist. \nWith a sound that masterfully blends Irish roots with fresh departures\, their repertoire includes distilled airs\, continental waltzes\, and high-energy reels and jigs.  The band chemistry of two accomplished classically trained fiddlers who share a common history as award winning Irish dancers along with two instrumentalists who have sought to redefine traditional accompaniment and rhythm sections amount to a compelling concert experience. \nReverie Road released their much-anticipated debut\, self-titled album in early 2024\, which immediately made waves in the Irish Traditional music genre. Even before they completed their 25-city album national launch tour across the United States\, the album was awarded the coveted “Debut Album of the Year” title by Ireland Tonight. In 2025\, they were one of six recipients of the Brian O’Donovan Legacy fund. \nWhether you’re a lover of traditional music or curious about its modern evolution\, Reverie Road delivers an exhilarating\, boundary-pushing performance that will leave your heart soaring and your toes tapping.

SUMMARY:Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The City of Holyoke has experienced multiple natural hazard events over the last few years\, from heavy rain and flooding to extreme heat events\, and from windstorms to winter storms that may lead to power outages. These events serve as continuous reminders of the risks posed by natural disasters. The City has maintained a natural hazard mitigation plan for many years\, with updates approximately once every five years. The City updated the plan over the past few months to produce a “Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Plan” for Holyoke. The plan outlines a set of approximately 40 actions that can be taken to reduce losses of property and life due to natural disasters like floods\, severe wind events\, winter storms\, wildfires\, droughts\, extreme heat events\, earthquakes\, and invasive species. \nThe Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Plan for Holyoke will continue to make the City eligible for hazard mitigation assistance grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The new draft is available at https://www.holyoke.org/hazard-mitigation-plan/. Past planning efforts related to climate change can be reviewed at the City’s web site (www.holyoke.org/conservation-municipal-vulnerability-preparedness-in-holyoke/). \nA public information session is scheduled for March 26\, 2025. The meeting will be held at the Holyoke Public Library (250 Chestnut Street\, Holyoke) in the Community Room at 6:00 PM. The Holyoke Public Library is located on the PVTA bus routes P20\, P21\, P21E\, B23\, R24\, X90. \nComments related to the draft Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Plan should be provided to the Conservation Department by March 28\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Moonlight Benjamin at De la Luz Soundstage
DESCRIPTION:Cafe opens for dinner at 6:00. Show at 7:00. \nA primal scream\, a mystifying and mystical musical mixture\, almost shamanic\, an incantation of liberation in the midst of raging guitars and propulsive drumming. As a longtime favorite of Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) and Iggy Pop\, the Haitian vodou priestess Moonlight Benjamin explores the roots of blues and rock in this new opus. Carried by a deeper and darker sound\, and by the unique voice of Moonlight\, influenced by Alabama Shakes\, Oumou Sangaré\, and Dr John\, the album Wayo is a primal scream\, a mystifying and mystical musical mixture\, almost shamanic\, an incantation of liberation in the midst of raging guitars and propulsive drumming. \nNicknamed “The Caribbean Patti Smith” by The Guardian (UK)\, Moonlight Benjamin plays a powerful and original music blending Caribbean voodoo melodies and a 70s blues rock inspired by Dr John\, Alabama Shakes\, the Black Keys or Oumou Sangaré.
