SUMMARY:Open Gallery Hours: "Colors of Grief\," A Rick's Place Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Rick’s Place Honors Children’s Grief Awareness Month with “Colors of Grief”\, an art exhibit showcasing poignant artwork created by both youth and adult participants from Rick’s Place. \nRick’s Place\, a beacon of support for children\, teens\, and families navigating grief\, is proud to present a special gallery exhibit at the historic Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke. Titled “Colors of Grief\,” artists were encouraged to reflect on their unique grief journeys and how these experiences have left an indelible mark. Each piece presented encapsulates an intimate\, heartfelt narrative of personal journeys through grief. \nRick’s Place aims to have this event serve a dual purpose: raising greater awareness about the profound impact of death\, grief\, and loss on youth and families\, and providing a platform for individuals to tell their stories through creative expression. With over 5\,000 children in Hampden County experiencing the loss of a parent or sibling\, Rick’s Place\, a non-profit organization\, extends its helping hand to youth between the ages of 5 and 18\, along with their caregivers\, who have confronted death. Peer support programs\, both on-site and in local schools\, help youth feel supported\, understood\, and less alone in their grief. \nWe cordially invite you to join us in celebrating these talented artists as they generously share their personal grief stories as we work towards broadening awareness of the profound impact that grief has on the lives of youth and their families. The Colors of Grief exhibit will be on display throughout February on Mondays (10am-2pm) and Tuesdays (4:30-6:30pm). To encourage everyone to see this touching exhibit\, both the opening reception and gallery hours are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Winter Birds in Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a passion for birds? Interested in learning more about them? Join us at Wistariahurst on February 26th for the event “Winter Birds in Massachusetts!” Staff from Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary will provide two seasonal programs on birds\, both to be held at Wistariahurst in Holyoke. Join us inside the museum as Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary gives an indoor presentation on the wintering birds of our area and how to identify them. Learn about the different types of bird feeders\, what to put in them\, and when to put out food. We will also discuss community science projects and what you can do to help birds thrive. After the indoor presentation\, guests can enjoy a quick walk outside to practice identifying the birds they learned about during the session. This program is a great way for people to learn how to identify backyard birds and indulge in a new winter activity! \nThe first program\, to be held in February\, will introduce participants to birds\, with a focus on both those found in winter and those found in Holyoke. The second program\, held in September will introduce participants to how to bird by ear or identify bird sounds. Both programs will start indoors\, with a PowerPoint\, and weather dependent\, go outdoors for the last hour to practice what was learned. This program is funded in part by a grant from the Holyoke Cultural Council\, a local agency that is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. Winter Birds in Massachusetts is free and open to the public\, so don’t let this opportunity fly over your head! Join us on February 26th\, 2025 from 2pm-4pm!

SUMMARY:Children's Wartime Adventure Novels – An online book talk with local author Jacqueline T. Lynch
DESCRIPTION:Jacqueline Lynch’s new book explores how WWII children’s literature—particularly adventure novels aimed at teens and young adolescents—shaped the world views of these readers\, readers who would later become members of the ‘Silent Generation\,’ known for their conformity and strong work ethic. In Lynch’s view\, how fictional nurses (Cherry Ames and Ann Bartlett) and young aviators (Dave Dawson and Stan Wilson) navigated wartime challenges served as entertainment\, information\, and indoctrination for those old enough to know about the war\, but too young to participate. \nRegister for the Zoom event  \nMs. Lynch will be joining us on Zoom. \nJacqueline T. Lynch is the author of many novels and works of non-fiction. She is also an award-winning playwright and the author of numerous published articles and works of short fiction. She previously appeared at the Library in 2017 to talk about her book\, Comedy and Tragedy on the Mountain: 70 Years of Summer Theatre on Mt. Tom\, Holyoke\, Massachusetts.
