DESCRIPTION:Linda Coombs (Aquinnah Wampanoag)\, Author of Colonization and the Wampanoag Story will speak with the public at Wistariahurst Museum on Saturday\, November 9 at 2 p.m. Her book presents the true story of America from the Indigenous perspective. When you think about the beginning of the American story\, what comes to mind? Three ships in 1492\, or perhaps buckled hats and shoes stepping off of the Mayflower\, ready to start a new country. But the truth is\, Christopher Columbus\, the Pilgrims\, and the Colonists didn’t arrive at a vast\, empty land ready to be developed. They arrived to find people and communities living in harmony with the land they had inhabited for thousands of years\, and they quickly disrupted everything they saw. Told from the perspective of the New England Indigenous Nations that these outsiders found when they arrived\, this is the true story of how America as we know it today began. \nLinda Coombs is an author and historian from the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah\, and lives in the Wampanoag community of Mashpee on Cape Cod\, MA. She will be speaking at Wistariahurst Museum as a culminating event to the four-week October Book Discussion Group that read and discussed in order to educate themselves and gain an understanding of the Indigenous perspective. \nCoombs\, who began her museum career at the Boston Children’s Museum in the Native American Program\, as well as working for the Wampanoag Indigenous Program (WIP) of Plimoth Plantation for 30 years\, and who presently does independent museum consulting and cultural presentations\, will be discussing with us\, her research techniques\, her writing style\, and her motivation. She will field questions from the audience about her book and her lived experience as a historian of Wampanoag background. \nSeveral copies of her book Colonization and the Wampanoag Story will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis\, thanks to a generous donation of books from The Massachusetts Center for the Book’s Great Reads About Great Places program. The Great Reads titles celebrate our state’s unique culture and literary heritage\, inspiring local conversations and spurring engagement.

Launching on November 14 at Wistariahurst Museum\, Matria brings to life the stories and achievements of five inspiring Puerto Rican women from Holyoke who have selflessly dedicated their time and energy to the better of Holyoke. I utilize my art as a way to prevent those stories and the experiences of other unheard voices from being erased. I feel that true change can only happen when you understand your past and give voice to those experiences. \nabout the artist:\nMichelle Falcón Fontánez is an award winning storyteller working in photography\, film\, and public art. The event\, scheduled for Thursday\, November 14 from 5:00-8:00 PM\, will showcase the transformed 40\,000-square-foot facility and feature a free concert by Grammy-nominated Afro-Rican Jazz band leader\, William Cepeda. \nThe historic three-building complex\, which LightHouse purchased in July\, has already undergone extensive renovations\, with much more in the works. The campus features two performance venues – the intimate De la Luz Divine theater and the 500-person capacity De la Luz Soundstage – along with a commercial kitchen\, café\, and an 8\,000-sq-ft maker-space-to-be. \n“This facility offers an extraordinary opportunity to expand our vision of what school can be\,” says Catherine Gobron\, co-founder and executive director. “By integrating education with public spaces for arts\, music\, and making\, we’re creating opportunities for genuine connections across diverse communities\, breaking down traditional barriers between school and life\, and building a place where social justice and transformative learning happen naturally through daily interactions.” \nThrough the new De la Luz Technical Arts Institute\, LightHouse is now offering vocational tracks in sound and lighting engineering and live event production\, unprecedented at the high school level. A culinary arts track will launch in January 2025 in conjunction with the reopening of the onsite café\, while carpentry and metalworking programs are currently in development. \nThe Open House will include guided tours\, demonstrations\, and presentations about LightHouse’s innovative educational programs\, and The Carolyn Dufraine Trio will be showcasing in De la Luz Divine. The café will be open featuring local chef\, Neftalí Duran. The evening culminates with a free concert at 7:00 PM featuring William Cepeda\, a cultural icon of Puerto Rico known for pioneering Afro-Rican Jazz in the larger De la Luz Soundstage. \nThanks to generous sponsors including Bueno y Sano\, People’s Bank\, Lumber Dog\, Bresnahan Insurance\, and Greenfield Northampton Cooperative Bank\, both the Open House and concert are free to attend. While admission is complimentary\, donations are welcome to support LightHouse’s ongoing renovation and development efforts. DESCRIPTION:The Children’s Museum at Holyoke is pleased to announce the completion of our newest exhibit\, The Paw & Play! Join us for our grand opening as we celebrate with FREE Museum Admission\, guided activities\, local organizations\, and a visit from Love on a Leash therapy dogs! \nThis exhibit is a holistic approach to public safety through a helping lens with the help of our furry friends\, the working dogs! Looking at K9 Dogs\, Service Dogs\, Search and Rescue Dogs\, Herding Dogs\, and Therapy Dogs we learn how these canines help their human companions and the community at large. The exhibit itself is modeled after a training agility course\, comparing and contrasting human vs. canine abilities with active play pieces and educational wall texts graphics\, in Spanish and English. \nPlay pieces include a ‘Canine Climb’ rock wall\, jump test\, climbing rope with foam pit\, balance beam\, and small movable equipment to allow the option of guided activities. \nThis installation was designed and executed entirely in-house with illustration and graphic design done by local artist Sam Lou and printing done around the corner at The Print Shop by Holyoke Art – it’s a 100% local effort. From painting\, to building\, to installing wall graphics\, it was all done by hand! \nWhen? November 23rd \n10:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Free Admission! \n12:00 AM – 4:00 PM – Regular Museum Admission \nWhere? 444 Dwight Street\, Holyoke\, MA 01040! \nTabling organizations\, refreshments\, and visiting therapy dogs will be upstairs in our picnic area and guided activities and crafts will be run downstairs on the Museum floor in and out of the new exhibit!
