Experience the magic of the first floor at Wistariahurst Museum during our Self-Guided Tour hours! We have added a new\, fun activity that will entertain and educate all who participate: Winston’s Scavenger Hunt! Search for Winston’s clues to answer historical questions and learn more about the museum while you explore each of the rooms. Best of all\, there is no time limit to this scavenger hunt\, so all can enjoy this activity at their own pace. At the end of your hunt\, stop by the front desk to show your answers and win a fun prize! \nLooking for a challenge? Staff are on the lookout for Winston the Wisty Lion and need your help! Winston is sleeping somewhere in our museum\, but we can’t find him! During your self-guided tour\, keep your eyes open for our lethargic\, little lion. When you find him\, don’t shout and wake him up! Take a picture or selfie with him and show your picture to our front desk attendant to get an exclusive Winston sticker! \nAre you a fan of board games and family bonding experiences? Meet us in the Music Room! We will have a selection of board and lawn games for guests to engage with! Enjoy games such as large Jenga and Connect Four\, or compete with loved ones with options of board games for you to choose from! SUMMARY:Project Eagle: The Top-Secret Operation that sent Polish Spies behind German Lines
DESCRIPTION:Meet the author of the new book: Project Eagle: The Top-Secret Operation that sent Polish Spies behind German Lines during World War Two. \nAfter the Germans had surprised Allied troops at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge in 1944\, the OSS (Office of Strategic Services–forerunner of the CIA) revamped its intelligence operations in Europe and began enlisting the cooperation of volunteers from occupied countries for wartime intelligence-gathering operations. As part of Project Eagle\, Polish soldiers were recruited and trained to go behind the lines of the Third Reich. Project Eagle tells this fascinating World War II story of intelligence and espionage that until now has been hidden away in the archives of the OSS. Professor Micgiel will tell us more about this history and his research on this special visit to Holyoke on September 9. Sponsored by the Holyoke History Room.  Info: (413) 420-8107 \nJohn S. Micgiel was born and raised in Holyoke.  His academic career led him to serve as director of the Institute on East Central Europe\, associate director of the Harriman Institute\, executive director of the Institute for the Study of Europe\, and adjunct professor of international and public affairs—all at Columbia University. He is past president of the Kosciuszko Foundation\, which promotes cultural exchange between the United States and Poland. In 2011 he received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland\, an award honoring service to the Polish-American community. Now retired from Columbia University\, Micgiel teaches at the University of Warsaw and makes his home in Connecticut.

SUMMARY:In Conversation with Barry Moser: Part of the Legacy Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Wistariahurst Museum is honoring the 150th Anniversary of this historic building’s relocation to City of Holyoke which occurred in 1874. This fall\, we invite guests to participate in our Legacy Seminar Series to learn more about events\, exhibits and structures which have impacted the building\, the community and the arts. \nJoin us on September 10th with guest artist\, Barry Moser as he discusses illustration\, wood engraving\, printing\, andhis work through his eyes as a working artist. As a professor of art and an illustrator with a portfolio of over 300 titles\, Moser’s vast experience in printing\, painting\, printmaking\, designing\, writing\, essay writing\, and teaching offers a deep understanding of the dedication required for visual artwork. In conversation with Wistariahurst curator\, Penni Martorell guests will be welcome to reflect and ask questions about the creative processes involved in Moser’s complex illustrations. In 1977\, 1982 and 1984 Moser exhibited his wood engraving work at Wistariahurst highlighting his prints for Alice through the Looking Glass and What She Found There\, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Now\, nearly fifty years later we are happy to welcome him back to reflect on his work. \nWhether you are a long-time resident or a newcomer eager to learn more about the place you now call home\, these seminars provide a perfect opportunity to connect with the past and understand how it influences our present and future. Most importantly\, our Legacy Seminar Series is free and open to the public during event hours so that all can explore\, discover\, and engage with these unique topics.

Their site-specific\, environmentally attuned projects emerge through partnership with the natural world and the spaces we create\, inhabit\, and neglect across its terrain. These works explore personal and collective turmoil and reveal how chronic illness and the cycles of life and death are woven into the fabric of ecological change. \nReception is free\, includes an informal Meet & Greet with the artists\, and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Reflections of the Flood with Elizabeth Sharpe: Part of the Legacy Seminar Series
\nOn September 17th\, Elizabeth Sharpe\, the author of “In the Shadow of the Dam: The Aftermath of the Mill River Flood of 1874\,” will discuss the the flood of 1874 and the events that led up to that tragic event. The incident claimed 139 lives and wiped out four mill villages in the area and marked the first significant dam failure in the United States. The aftermath saw William Skinner relocating his silk factory to Holyoke\, while the affected villages began the process of rebuilding. Sharpe will delve into the disaster’s impact\, the challenges faced in the aftermath\, the investigation to determine accountability\, and the pursuit of compensation.

SUMMARY:Free Pipe Organ Concert
DESCRIPTION:A free recital is offered at the Holyoke UCC church by Dr. Klaus Becker\, UMASS professor and former Dean of the Springfield Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He is offering this recital free of charge as a musical tour of northern Europe. \nA fire in his home destroyed the majority of the musical compositions by Marcel Lanquetuit\, principal organist of the Rouen Cathedral’s mighty Cavaille-Coll organ. Though no fire alarm will be set off at this concert\, nonetheless the grand and inspiring Toccata in D Major will call your attention to a colorful program. The tour begins in Normandy\, Northern France\, and you are invited to travel\, or rather go on pilgrimage\, to Leipzig\, Germany\, to pay homage to the great J. S. Bach with his grandiose Prelude and Fugue in D Major as well as the Fantasy and Fugue in in g minor. Continuing our trip\, you will visit Marco Enrico Bossi at the Como Cathedral in Northern Italy and listen to the magical and mysterious Scherzo in g minor. Rejuvenated\, we will arrive in Paris\, France\, to hear Eugene Gigout’s sparkling Toccata and his profound Grand Choeur Dialogue. After a brief excursion to Belgium for Joseph Jongen’s famous Toccata\, we will return to Paris to revel in Louis Vierne’s Final from his 6th Symphony. On the wings of this piece\, you may reach the tip of the Eiffel Tower. Klaus will play this program centering on the Romantic Period on the E.M. Skinner Opus 179 organ. This will be a memorable afternoon well worth attending! \nFree will donation received to benefit Holyoke food pantry.

DESCRIPTION:For the first time since 1999\, Holyoke is updating its Comprehensive Plan\, a Commonwealth-mandated document under that requires Massachusetts cities and towns to maintain a plan for their long-term physical development.
