SUMMARY:Nature/Nurture Art Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Women’s History Month by viewing the Nature/Nurture Art Exhibit at Wistariahurst Museum in March! Artists identifying as female or nonbinary were asked how they viewed the theme of nature versus nurture. This debate centers around our genes and surroundings\, with both factors playing a role in mental and physical well-being while shaping personalities. This exhibition showcases a variety of viewpoints on the complex interplay between nature and nurture. Some artworks delve into the powerful impact of genetics\, examining how inherited traits and biological tendencies can shape a person’s path. Others highlight the nurturing side\, underscoring the importance of upbringing\, life experiences\, and surroundings in defining one’s sense of self. \nThe jury selected five artists to showcase for the Nature/Nurture art exhibit: Anne Bradford Spencer\, Deborah Yaffe\, Shelsy Rodiguez\, Camille Roos\, and River Nation. The museum had so many wonderful submissions that more artists will be included as honorable mentions. These talented individuals delve into various mediums from photography to sculptures\, showcasing their distinctive artwork in our gallery for everyone to appreciate\, gather\, and explore this year’s theme. \nDuring the opening reception\, get a first look at the exhibit and speak with some of the artists who helped shape this year’s theme with their artwork. We will be joined by some of our featured as we feature them on our artist panel to talk about what inspired their art\, their experiences\, and what their thoughts on this year’s theme.

The museum had so many wonderful submissions that more artists will be included as honorable mentions. These talented individuals delve into various mediums from photography to sculptures\, showcasing their distinctive artwork in our gallery for everyone to appreciate\, gather\, and explore this year’s theme.

SUMMARY:Rescuing Richardson's Station: Holyoke's 1885 Train Depot\, with Will Melton
DESCRIPTION:Considered by many to be the greatest American architect of the 19th century\, Henry Hobson Richardson and his firm were commissioned to design more than two dozen railroad stations\, many along the east-west line of the Boston & Albany Railroad. Only one\, his 1885 Holyoke Passenger Station\, was completed in his lifetime on the north-south line between New York and Montreal (the Connecticut River Railroad). When rail passenger service to Holyoke was abandoned nearly 80 years later\, the station was altered into automobile parts and machine shops. \nIt sat empty for decades until local businessman David White bought the building in 2021\, “tired of listening to people complain ‘Someone should fix it before it falls down.'” His takeout restaurant and Choo Choo’s Ice Cream shop will open on the site this Spring. Dave’s friend Will Melton will tell the story of Richardson and this architectural commission. \nThis is Will Melton’s third history talk for Holyoke Public Library. He retired in 2015 after four decades in university and museum fund raising to devote time to gardening\, his mandolin ensemble\, and history studies and writing. Liberty’s War\, An Engineer’s Memoir of the Merchant Marine 1942-45\, which he published in 2017\, is available from U.S. Naval Institute Press\, our library\, and the C/W MARS library consortium.
