SUMMARY:Shining Light on the Truth: Uncovering the Counter Narrative.
DESCRIPTION:The Holyoke Ethnic Studies program is a vital aspect of the Holyoke Public Schools which provides students with the opportunity to learn about the world at large during a time when education is being confined to a single story. Holyoke’s Ethnic Studies Program seeks to empower all students to engage socially and politically and to think critically about the world around them. It is important for Ethnic Studies courses to document the experiences of people of color in order for students to construct counter narratives and see themselves reflected in their learning. \nOver the summer\, Holyoke Ethnic Studies partnered with Wistariahurst Museum and the UMass College of Education to employ Holyoke students to archive the important history of the Ethnic Studies program from 2013 to 2022. During the five weeks we collaborated with people that work with public art\, education\, historical research and more. These six young adults were given an opportunity to gain workplace skills\, expand on their Ethnic Studies education\, and connect with their community in new ways. \nWe invite you to Wistariahurst Museum for our opening night\, October 6\, 2023 from 5pm – 7pm\, the youth archivists will be presenting on their project and unveiling their summer work in an exhibit titled “Shining Light on the Truth: Uncovering the Counter Narrative.” The exhibit will show the work that the youth archivists achieved. There will be music\, fun activities and refreshments for the attendees. After opening night\, the exhibit will be open during museum hours through October 14\, 2023. Visit www.wistariahurst.org/events for more information. Follow us on Instagram and stay up to date on our exhibit! @YouthArchivistForSocialChange

SUMMARY:mssv |Sky Furrows | Vex Party
DESCRIPTION:Flywheel is excited to welcome back mssv on October 12! When they came through Northampton last year on their Haru Tour\, the crowd was awed by the chemical energy of these three monster players. Don’t sleep on this one! \nmssv\n(mike baggetta + stephen hodges + mike watt)\nA heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punky power trio and a dreamy experimental rock band. No less an authority than Nels Cline\, the high priest of art-rock guitarists\, has called Mike Baggetta a “guitar poet”. mssv is on tour celebrating the release of their second album Human Reaction featuring all new songs played throughout the Haru Tour in 2022. \nSKY FURROWS\nFronted by poet Karen Schoemer\, Albany NY’s Sky Furrows combine influences from krautrock\, NZ bands the Clean and the Verlaines\, the Minutemen\, Sylvia Plath and early Sonic Youth. Schoemer collaborates with bassist Mike Watt in Jaded Azurites\, and with Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby. Eric Hardiman\, Mike Griffin and Phil Donnelly are members of psych rock unit Burnt Hills. \nVEX PARTY\nHolyoke-based experimental musics.

SUMMARY:Closing Reception for THE CITY ON PAPER: REPRESENTATIONS OF HOLYORÍCAN LIFE
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1978\, John Leni Marcy began his photographic work in Holyoke. His first pictures\, made with a 35mm Olympus OM1 camera\, were of old mill buildings\, bridges and canals. The six or so years of photographic work from which this exhibition was taken had its beginning as Mr. Marcy was leaving Holyoke. As he approached Newton Street\, he saw a teenage boy doing wheelies up the hill on his BMX bike framed by a beautiful old advertisement painted on the side of a brick building. He took out his camera and took a photograph. This was witnessed by some other children\, who asked him to take their pictures. He made prints and gave them to the young people he had photographed. He resolved to pursue this new connection and see where it might take him. \nThis exhibit of a portion of Marcy’s work was curated and captioned in 2022 by students in Latinx Literature and Latinx Politics classes at Holyoke Community College\, under the direction of Raúl D. Gutiérrez and Mark S. Clinton\, respectively. It was funded by a Holyoke History Room grant from the American Library Association’s American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries. \nCaptions\, introduction and a curatorial essay were written by the student curators. All Materials were translated by Professor Idoia Martínez del Mozo. \nCelebrate this exhibition by joining us for a closing reception on October 20\, 2023 7-9 p.m. Refreshments will be provided\, and all visitors are welcome to join Gallery Director\, Rachel Rushing at 8:30 p.m. for a darkroom printing demonstration.

SUMMARY:How the aztecs observed the days of the dead
DESCRIPTION:The 9th and 10th months of the Aztec calendar\, the Little Feast of the Dead\, and the Great Feast of the Dead\, were public spectacles of imperial power. These festivals\, at the main temple of Tenochtitlan\, the Aztec capital\, were also about state religion\, ritual sacrifice\, and promoted the never-ending warfare of the Aztec empire. \nThese ceremonies were also known to the Azteca as the Bestowal of Flowers\, and the Feast of the Old Fire God. There’s clearly much more to the Dia de Muertos than face painting and guacamole. \nUsing original source material\, I’ll explore the indigenous\, pre-Hispanic roots of what has become\, for Mexicans\, a magical and powerful commemoration and celebration of loved ones who have passed. \nJay Savage studied history of science at Harvard and Cornell and is a big fan of the theory of knowledge\, though much about the Aztecs can’t be known.

SUMMARY:The Cozy Bookclub & Fiber Circle
DESCRIPTION:Are you dreading winter? Do you spend the whole time dreaming of Spring? Stop! There’s a lot to enjoy about the winter\, and we’re taking inspiration from The Little Book of Hygge (pronounced hyoo · guh). The closest English synonym would be Cozy! \nThis group meets on Thursdays for 10 weeks\, beginning October 26 and ending January 11. \nEach week we’ll meet together to talk about a chapter or two and a different concept from the Hygge Manifesto\, namely Atmosphere\, Presence\, Pleasure\, Equality\, Gratitude\, Harmony\, Comfort\, Truce\, Togetherness\, and Shelter. The Cozy Bookclub doesn’t just talk about cozy higgle\, though; we’re about it! Feel free to bring your own fiber project\, wether embroidery\, crochet\, knitting\, or hand sewing\, this is an opportunity to work on (or learn!) a fiber-based craft. Some general guidance and sample projects will be provided\, but participants are encouraged to follow their passions and bring their own projects to the circle. We don’t want cost to be a reason someone can’t join in\, so participation is free with a suggested donation of $5-10 at the door to cover the cost of operating and snacks. \nIf you register for the cost of the book\, it’ll be mailed to you ahead of the class. If you have a copy\, feel free to sign up below and bring it with you!
