SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening for Carrying Prayer: Reclamation\, Remembrance\, and Honor
DESCRIPTION:A bold and breathtaking exhibition featuring the work of Anthony Melting Tallow\, Bo’taan’niis\, (Flying Chief) will open on October 6\, 2022 at the Wistariahurst Museum. A member of the Blackfoot nation and proud Two Spirit\, Aya’kii’kas’si\, (Walks A Journey Between)\, Melting Tallow’s work addresses land dispossession\, residential school inter-generational trauma\, reframing indigenous voices\, misappropriation of native imagery\, and violence against indigenous women. Most importantly\, Melting Tallow’s work represents hope. \nAccompanying Melting Tallow’s stunning visionary artwork is an installation embodying the memory of those lost to violence. According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs\, there are an estimated 4\,200 missing and murdered investigations that have gone unsolved\, the majority of which involve women. In total\, more than 1.5 million American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced violence in their lifetime. \nPre-registration is requested.\nCity of Holyoke board of health protocols for COVID 19 will be followed.

SUMMARY:Valley Jazz Shares Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Griots Speak: William Parker\, bass\, Juma Sultan\, djembe\, percussion; Daniel Carter\, reeds\, trumpet; Charlie Apicella\, madal drum. Saturday\, Oct. 29\, 7:30pm. Single tickets ($15) available at www.jazzshares.org. \nThe Griots Speak has roots which reach to the dawn of the improvised music community which sprang to life in 1960s New York City. Trail blazing percussionist Juma Sultan formed the quartet to help celebrate the life and work of Studio We founder James DuBois\, a patriarch of the loft scene. The band’s music is poetry in motion–simultaneously fluid\, extroverted\, light\, confrontational\, meditative\, and comforting.

SUMMARY:The Olmsteds in Holyoke
DESCRIPTION:It is known that the Olmsted Brothers produced plans for the design of Holyoke’s Prospect (now Pulaski) Park and other public spaces\, but few know that the firm worked on more than twenty Holyoke projects.  In this talk\, Bob Comeau\, leader of the Holyoke Canal Tours\, will provide an overview of twenty-two parks and residential landscapes that appear in the records of John C. Olmsted and his brother Frederick Law Olmsted\, Jr.  While not all were realized\, the plans reflect the enthusiasm with which Holyoke and its wealthier residents embraced the City Beautiful movement of the early twentieth century. Sponsored by the Holyoke History Room.  Free and open to the public. For more information: (413) 420-8107. \nThis is an in-person event.

SUMMARY:The Skinner Family and The Orchards Golf Course\, A lecture by Bill Armistead.
DESCRIPTION:In 1921 Joseph Skinner was living in South Hadley with his wife\, Martha\, and their second child\, Elisabeth. Three of their children had married and moved out the estate\, but Elisabeth\, never married. When not helping her mother cope with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis\, she was playing golf at Mt. Tom Golf Course. But that was a 20 minute car ride away\, and Joseph wanted a convenient place for her to play. So he called Donald Ross to design and build a course across the street from his home. The family named it The Orchards. \nIn addition to the Skinner family\, the lecture and slide show covers the career of Donald Ross\, who lived in Holyoke for four years. By using Ross’s blueprints and period photographs of horses pulling sleds\, Bill documents the course’s creation. He discusses Jimmy and Minnie Young\, who ran the club for 38 years\, and Mount Holyoke College\, which has owned the course since 1941. Finally\, Bill will share photographs from the two USGA championships contested on the property\, in 1987 and 2004. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Armistead is a retired businessman\, having spent his career in corporate finance\, including stints at Lockheed Martin\, MCI\, and a start-up telecommunications company. For five years he taught Finance at American University in Washington\, DC. \nHis mother was Peggy Skinner Armistead\, who grew up at Dogwood\, a large estate off of Northampton St in Holyoke\, which was owned by her father\, William Skinner II. Elisabeth Skinner was Bill’s great aunt. \nHe served on the boards of Wistariahurst and Berkshire Hills Music Academy\, which owns the former Skinner estate in South Hadley. \nBill recently published a book\, “The Orchards…One Hundred Years\,” which he wrote in celebration of The Orchards’ centennial year. He is considering a book about another golf course.

SUMMARY:August Landscape Tour with Historian and Master Gardener
DESCRIPTION:Join City Historian\, Penni Martorell\, and Wistariahurst Master Gardener\, Phyllis Barrett\, for a guided tour of Wistariahurst’s historic gardens and grounds. Learn about how the landscape and gardens have evolved over the years; what has been planted here historically\, and the history of this plot of land. Your guides will share stories about how the Skinner family came to be here and what the property looked like when they lived here. \nNamed after the wisteria vine that flowers in May\, Wistariahurst was home to two generations of the Skinner family who loved to garden.  Begun by Sarah Skinner in the late 19th Century and then transformed by her daughter Belle Skinner in the early 20th\, the grounds and gardens have always been an integral part of the life and activities at Wistariahurst. \nHear stories about the about the vines\, the wooded area\, the victory garden\,  and the tea house. Discover the lions\, the spirit gate and the dinosaur tracks.  Learn about the historical and contemporary planning and planting and hear how a dedicated team of volunteers in the 21st century have restored and maintained this beautiful environment. \nAdvance registration is required for this tour.

SUMMARY:Stories of Our LBGTQ Ancestors: Dr. Amber Starbuck\, Mabel Stevens\, and the Big House.
DESCRIPTION:From the late 1920s through the late 1960s\, the economy of Middlefield\, Massachusetts revolved around an innovative health resort owned and run by a power couple of two women\, Dr. Amber Starbuck (a medical doctor) and Mabel Stevens (one of the first female taxi drivers). Both women were trailblazers and nonconformists. The lesbian relationship they had was publicly known and respected. This is the story of their lives separately and together\, their involvement with the YWCA and early feminist programs\, and how they came to run the highly successful Big House. 90-minute slide presentation plus a Q and A. \nThis series of three talks taking place this summer is based on original research conducted by the Sexual Minorities Archives about pre-Stonewall LGBTQ figures who lived and worked in western Massachusetts. \nPresented by Sam Edwards

SUMMARY:Noche De San Juan 2022
DESCRIPTION:What is Noche de San Juan? Puerto Ricans all over the world celebrate la Noche de San Juan – an eve of a feast for Saint John\, the Baptist’s birth. Unlike other festivities around the world\, in Puerto Rico\, this celebration -which occurs two days before the summer solstice- marks a holiday spent at the beach. The tradition goes that at the stroke of midnight\, people take at least three backward plunges – though some do seven or 12 dives\, to rid life of all negativities. In Holyoke\, we host a Festival with water activities for all ages to do a similar feel of the tradition. There will also be a car show for those who would like to participate reach out to Kayla Info@nuevaofholyoke.org

SUMMARY:Dressing Independence: The Creation of American Military Dress with Dr. Matthew Keagle of Fort Ticonderoga. An Online Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual\, and visual\, exploration of the origins of American military uniforms. From colonies to republic\, Americans used military clothing to do more than just identify soldiers and keep them warm. Military uniforms reinforced the legitimacy of American independence and create a sense of national identity. This journey was not straightforward and was impacted by America’s political and cultural diversity\, the fortunes of war\, and the struggling economy of the young nation. Dr. Keagle is the Curator of the Fort Ticonderoga Museum\, one of North America’s largest collections of early modern military material culture.  Since joining Fort Ticonderoga in 2014 he has been involved developing exhibits\, conducting research\, delivering programs\, and advancing our understanding of the 18th-century military experience. He has researched and lectured at archives and collections across the US\, Canada\, and Europe\, with a particular research focus on military dress in the 18th century.\nThis is a virtual presentation and pre-registration is required to receive the online invitation.

SUMMARY:Holyoke Green Infrastructure Workshop #3: “Resilient Plants (part 2)”
DESCRIPTION:*Note that the Community Field event originally scheduled for this date has been cancelled. June 11th will now be a continuation of the planting activities on Race street* \nCelebrating facilities that manage rainfall using plants is central to a three-part series offered by the City of Holyoke. The events are free and offer food for those attending. \nResilient Plants (Part 2) – Saturday\, June 11\, 10 to noon\, Race St. (between Dwight and Appleton Streets). SUMMARY:Stories of Our LGBTQ Ancestors: Marion Turner
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person at Wistariahurst as Ben Power of the Sexual Minorities Archives will present the first lecture in the Stories of Our LGBTQ+ Ancestors lecture series. \nMarion Turner was an African American\, gender non-conforming person who lived in Florence\, Massachusetts from 1898 to 1903. Atkins and became involved with her in abolitionist efforts as they frequented Cosmian Hall. Turner held gatherings of young Black Americans at Mrs. Atkins house\, inviting them up from the South to find opportunities in New England. This is a one-hour slide presentation plus a Q and A. \nBen Power Alwin (he/him)\, Founder and Executive Director of the Sexual Minorities Educational Foundation (SMEF)\, Inc. has been the Curator of the Sexual Minorities Archives (SMA) since 1977. \nThese lectures and events are funded by a Holyoke Local Cultural Council grant.
