SUMMARY:Holyoke Historic and Cultural Tourism Plan Public Outreach Event!
DESCRIPTION:Holyoke Historic and Cultural Tourism Plan Public Outreach Event \nThe City of Holyoke Office of Planning and Economic Development (OPED) and the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission (PVPC) will be co-hosting a public meeting on Wednesday\, June 22nd\, between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Holyoke Senior Center on 291 Pine Street. \nThere will be duplicate presentations at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. about the Holyoke Historic and Cultural Tourism Plan\, the new Explore Holyoke website and Holyoke Community Calendar\, and the Holyoke Library History Room’s Ciudad de Historias/City of Stories project. There will be a Spanish translator available\, and the presentations will be shared on Holyoke Media. \nPublic input will be sought during the event to gain insight about how residents value Holyoke’s historic and cultural resources. And to better understand what residents would like to see further developed or provided as part of the Holyoke experience in a manner that is representative of the city’s history and cultural heritage. The feedback will be incorporated into the Holyoke Historic and Cultural Tourism Plan\, which is being created as an amendment to the recently completed Holyoke Tourism Strategic Plan. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Ileana Carrion at Carrioni@holyoke.org. \nhttps://www.holyoke.org/departments/planning-economic-development/ \nhttps://www.pvpc.org/ \nhttps://www.exploreholyoke.com/ \nhttps://www.exploreholyoke.com/calendar/ \nhttp://www.holyokelibrary.org/historyabout.asp \nhttp://www.holyokelibrary.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CityofStoriesPR%2D22Mar22f%2Drev.pdf \nhttps://holyokehasenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Holyoke-Tourism-Plan.pdf

SUMMARY:Dressing Independence: The Creation of American Military Dress with Dr. Matthew Keagle of Fort Ticonderoga. An Online Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual\, and visual\, exploration of the origins of American military uniforms. From colonies to republic\, Americans used military clothing to do more than just identify soldiers and keep them warm. Military uniforms reinforced the legitimacy of American independence and create a sense of national identity. This journey was not straightforward and was impacted by America’s political and cultural diversity\, the fortunes of war\, and the struggling economy of the young nation. Dr. Keagle is the Curator of the Fort Ticonderoga Museum\, one of North America’s largest collections of early modern military material culture.  Since joining Fort Ticonderoga in 2014 he has been involved developing exhibits\, conducting research\, delivering programs\, and advancing our understanding of the 18th-century military experience. He has researched and lectured at archives and collections across the US\, Canada\, and Europe\, with a particular research focus on military dress in the 18th century.\nThis is a virtual presentation and pre-registration is required to receive the online invitation.

SUMMARY:Holyoke Green Infrastructure Workshop #3: “Resilient Plants (part 2)”
DESCRIPTION:*Note that the Community Field event originally scheduled for this date has been cancelled. June 11th will now be a continuation of the planting activities on Race street* \nCelebrating facilities that manage rainfall using plants is central to a three-part series offered by the City of Holyoke. Each event is designed to showcase a different “green infrastructure” facility in the City and give participants an opportunity to gather and learn from hands-on activities that range from rebuilding a drainage path to getting new plants into the soil. The events are free and offer food for those attending. \nResilient Plants (Part 2) – Saturday\, June 11\, 10 to noon\, Race St. (between Dwight and Appleton Streets). Explore urban factors that make it tough for plants to survive. Then help re-plant with native species suited to this environment. \nPlease RSVP Here: https://forms.gle/AnrXvDw2tm1Dg3WDA \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Stories of Our LGBTQ Ancestors: Marion Turner
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person at Wistariahurst as Ben Power of the Sexual Minorities Archives will present the first lecture in the Stories of Our LGBTQ+ Ancestors lecture series. \nMarion Turner was an African American\, gender non-conforming person who lived in Florence\, Massachusetts from 1898 to 1903. Turner sometimes dressed in male attire and sometimes in female attire\, and alternated pronouns to refer to themselves accordingly. Turner lived and worked with Mrs. J.D. Atkins and became involved with her in abolitionist efforts as they frequented Cosmian Hall. Turner held gatherings of young Black Americans at Mrs. Atkins house\, inviting them up from the South to find opportunities in New England. This is a one-hour slide presentation plus a Q and A. \nBen Power Alwin (he/him)\, Founder and Executive Director of the Sexual Minorities Educational Foundation (SMEF)\, Inc. has been the Curator of the Sexual Minorities Archives (SMA) since 1977. \nThese lectures and events are funded by a Holyoke Local Cultural Council grant.
