DESCRIPTION:Get ready for another amazing Dia de Los Muertos celebration with Attack Bear Press and Wistariahurst Museum with a special calaveras (skull) painting event. Dia de Los Muertos is a special tradition that allows people to celebrate and remember deceased loved ones by decorating an ofrenda\, a communal altar dedicated to those dearly departed. On October 19th\, we invite you to paint your clay calaveras to add to the annual ofrenda hosted at the museum again this year. Thanks to Attack Bear Press\, all painting materials and calaveras will be provided at the event. You may also bring a photograph of your departed loved ones to not only add a personal touch to your artwork but so that the community can honor and remember them as well. After Dia de Los Muertos has passed\, you are welcome to retrieve your photographs and painted skull to take home as a cherished keepsake. \nDon’t miss this unique chance to connect with the rich tapestry of Dia de Los Muertos and contribute to a vibrant\, communal ofrenda. We invite you to join us\, and we encourage you to bring your friends and family to celebrate with all of your loved ones. Viewing for the 7th Annual Holyoke Community Ofrenda will be available for special open hours on November 1st from 6:00-8:00pm\, November 2nd from 12:00-2:00pm\, and November 3rd from 10:00am-2:00pm. We can’t wait to see the collective beauty and heartfelt tributes created by our very own community and celebrate this important holiday. \nPrepárate para otra increíble celebración del Día de los Muertos con Attack Bear Press y el Museo Wistariahurst con un evento especial de pintura de calaveras. El Día de los Muertos es una tradición especial que permite a las personas celebrar y recordar a sus seres queridos fallecidos decorando una ofrenda\, un altar comunitario dedicado a los difuntos. El 19 de octubre\, te invitamos a pintar tus calaveras de arcilla para añadirlas a la ofrenda anual que se celebra en el museo también este año. Gracias a Attack Bear Press\, todos los materiales de pintura y las calaveras se proporcionarán en el evento. DESCRIPTION:Independent artist and musician Madison McFerrin has come into her own. The daughter of legendary vocalist Bobby McFerrin\, Madison’s distinct vocal and meticulously layered stylings of a capella and self-harmonizing culminate in work that blends the genres of R&B\, pop\, soul and jazz\, all with a sense of softness. Her genre-bending work has led to Questlove dubbing her early sound “soul-appella\,” AdHoc to describe her work as “an oasis of serenity\,” and The FADER noting how Madison’s “warm harmonies feel effortless.” \nThe throughline of Madison’s work is independence and she is often looking towards a kind of inner liberation. Whether she is writing about understanding one’s intuition and inner beauty or the cyclical violence of anti-Blackness and sexism\, Madison explores how to get free and how to care for oneself along the way. \nIn this\, Madison works at the intersection of artistry and community building. She often looks back and honors a Black music canon while creating her own unique style\, utilizing her voice as a central instrument and drawing upon lifelong inspirations like Stevie Wonder\, Aretha Franklin\, Erykah Badu\, Pharell\, Missy Elliot\, and the Spice Girls. She is in community with other artists\, cultural workers\, and activists\, and has been able to prioritize the work of women and POC in her curatorial tenures at venues like C’mon Everybody\, the WNYC Greene Space and the BRIC Jazz festival. The result of Madison’s work is an enduring commitment to finding ways to think better\, express ourselves honestly\, and nurture a sense of possibility. \nDoors and cafe open at 6:00\, show at 7:00.
