SUMMARY:MATRIA by Michelle Falcón Fontánez Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:The City of Holyoke and Wistariahurst is proud to present the opening of Matria\, a compelling photo installation by local artist Michelle Falcón Fontanes. Launching on November 14 at Wistariahurst Museum\, Matria brings to life the stories and achievements of five inspiring Puerto Rican women from Holyoke who have selflessly dedicated their time and energy to the better of Holyoke. Supported by funding from the NEFA Making it Public Grant and Mass in Motion\, this project captures the resilience and impact of these women as social justice warriors\, advocates\, and leaders working within our community. \nAfter its debut at Wistariahurst\, Matria will move in Spring 2025 to Holyoke’s Puerto Rican Cultural District on Main Street\, inviting an even broader audience to witness and celebrate these womens journeys. \nJoin us on November 14th from 5 to 7pm to honor these community champions and experience the exceptional photographic work of Michelle Falcón Fontanez.\nEntrance to the Wistariahurst is free to the community during operating hours\, please email info@wistariahurst.org to inquire about open hours and when you can see this beautiful exhibit. \n— \nhonoring HER\nWomen are at the forefront of creating lasting change in our communities\, but are often undervalued\, overlooked and ignored. \nMATRIA uplifts the stories of five Puerto Rican women that have made significant contributions in Holyoke. These leaders have dedicated themselves to making positive change in our community through activism\, preserving history\, fighting for accessible education\, connecting community members with resources and engaging in volunteer work. \nThe community leaders featured in this project include: Gladys Lebrón-Martínez\, María Salgado-Cartagena\, Marisela Alvarado\, Marisol Fontánez Cuadrado\, and Yamaris Rivera. \nartist statement:\nMy people have been oppressed\, silenced\, restricted\, forgotten\, and murdered\, ultimately leading to the erasure of our stories. I grew up without any knowledge of my Puerto Rican history or an understanding of what our people sacrificed to preserve the little pieces of us that remained. I utilize my art as a way to prevent those stories and the experiences of other unheard voices from being erased. I feel that true change can only happen when you understand your past and give voice to those experiences. \nabout the artist:\nMichelle Falcón Fontánez is an award winning storyteller working in photography\, film\, and public art. Michelle has witnessed and personally experienced injustices that have shaped her views of the world\, motivating her pursuit of making change through art. Her artistry has primarily focused on social justice issues\, advocating for women’s rights\, dismantling colonialism\, and calling attention to Puerto Rican issues\, ultimately creating work to illuminate voices that have not been heard.

SUMMARY:Trip the Light Fantastic with William Cepeda
DESCRIPTION:LightHouse Holyoke\, an accredited middle and high school for self-directed learning\, announces a community-wide Open House celebration at its newly acquired campus\, the former Gateway City Arts complex at 92 Race Street. The event\, scheduled for Thursday\, November 14 from 5:00-8:00 PM\, will showcase the transformed 40\,000-square-foot facility and feature a free concert by Grammy-nominated Afro-Rican Jazz band leader\, William Cepeda. \nThe historic three-building complex\, which LightHouse purchased in July\, has already undergone extensive renovations\, with much more in the works. The campus features two performance venues – the intimate De la Luz Divine theater and the 500-person capacity De la Luz Soundstage – along with a commercial kitchen\, café\, and an 8\,000-sq-ft maker-space-to-be. \n“This facility offers an extraordinary opportunity to expand our vision of what school can be\,” says Catherine Gobron\, co-founder and executive director. “By integrating education with public spaces for arts\, music\, and making\, we’re creating opportunities for genuine connections across diverse communities\, breaking down traditional barriers between school and life\, and building a place where social justice and transformative learning happen naturally through daily interactions.” \nThrough the new De la Luz Technical Arts Institute\, LightHouse is now offering vocational tracks in sound and lighting engineering and live event production\, unprecedented at the high school level. A culinary arts track will launch in January 2025 in conjunction with the reopening of the onsite café\, while carpentry and metalworking programs are currently in development. \nThe Open House will include guided tours\, demonstrations\, and presentations about LightHouse’s innovative educational programs\, and The Carolyn Dufraine Trio will be showcasing in De la Luz Divine. The café will be open featuring local chef\, Neftalí Duran. The evening culminates with a free concert at 7:00 PM featuring William Cepeda\, a cultural icon of Puerto Rico known for pioneering Afro-Rican Jazz in the larger De la Luz Soundstage. \nThanks to generous sponsors including Bueno y Sano\, People’s Bank\, Lumber Dog\, Bresnahan Insurance\, and Greenfield Northampton Cooperative Bank\, both the Open House and concert are free to attend. While admission is complimentary\, donations are welcome to support LightHouse’s ongoing renovation and development efforts. To date\, the organization has raised $1.6M of their $3M goal for facility improvements.
