SUMMARY:Mary Doyle Curran Project
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Holyoke Council for Human Understanding will present the final event of the project about Holyoke Native Mary Doyle Curran.  The book group part of the project was started by longtime board member; the late Sue Ellen Panitch.  Upon Sue Ellen’s passing\, HCC Professor and CHU board member Patricia Kennedy\, picked up the mantle to finish the project with the installation of a headstone for Mary Doyle Curran and a graveside service at St. Jerome’s Cemetary on Saturday\, 29 June 2024 at 11am – 11:30am.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Nueva Esperanza’s 4th Annual Noche de San Juan Cookout\, a vibrant celebration of Puerto Rican culture and community spirit! While we may not have the beaches and bonfires like on the island\, we’re bringing the essence of this beloved tradition to Holyoke with an array of fun and festive activities. \nEvent Highlights: Live DJ and Dancing: Groove to the rhythms of traditional Puerto Rican music. Enjoy cultural music throughout the event with DJ Javi spinning the best tunes to keep the energy high and the atmosphere lively. \nGames and Prizes: Enjoy a variety of games and activities for all ages. From classic carnival games to exciting contests\, there’s something for everyone. \nArt Activities: Join local artist Natasha Colon from Paper City Arts Kids in a special painting activity. Kids can unleash their creativity and paint their vision of the beach\, bringing the coastal vibes to Holyoke. \nWater Fun: Cool off in the spray park and enjoy the water slides\, perfect for a hot summer day.\nFree Food and Refreshments: Savor delicious Burgers & hotdogs and treats. We’ll have free food\, refreshments for all\, piraguas (shaved ice)\, cotton candy\, and popcorn for children to enjoy. \nAbout Noche de San Juan: Noche de San Juan\, celebrated on June 23rd in Puerto Rico\, is a culturally significant event marking the eve of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist. Traditionally\, this night features beach gatherings\, music\, dancing\, bonfires\, and the symbolic midnight dip into the ocean for cleansing and good luck. Although we don’t have the ocean\, we’ll be embracing the spirit of this celebration with water activities\, music\, and communal joy. \nCommunity Collaboration: This event is proudly sponsored by the Mass Cultural Council and made possible through the collaboration of local organizations including Enlace de Familias\, YMCA\, OneHolyoke\, Mass in Motion\, Morgan School/HPS\, and the Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative.
