Holyoke History Tour

Converting the power of falling water to usable energy takes age-old technology. It’s what birthed Holyoke, and continues to power the city to this day. An introduction to waterpower and the vision of Holyoke’s founders begins in the Holyoke Heritage State Park Visitor Center. The tour continues outside as we walk along the canals and view revitalized mills. All children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information call Nancy at 413-534-1723.

The Great Holyoke Brick Race

Held annual on Race Street, The Great Holyoke Brick Race involves designing and building a  race car using a standard brick, cleverly mounted on wheels and raced down an inclined track using only gravity to cross the finish line. The Great Holyoke Brick Race emphasizes creativity and the sculptural quality of the race cars as well as making the fastest machine to cross the finish line.

Pulp – Artist Reception: Justin Kim

Reception for Artist Justin Kim at Pulp, Saturday, October 15th from 12-2pm. Justin Kim’s work explores perception and memory - specifically how information received is fragmented and elusive, yet made whole through our bodies, where our experience of the world oscillates between dissolution and synthesis.  Kim wants the work to speak to a broad audience, using familiar terms to challenge our assumed relationship to the world.  Kim has exhibited across the Northeast, and is currently based at The Elizabeth Foundation in New York.  He has taught at Yale, Dartmouth, Smith College, Umass and Deep Springs College in California.  

PULP – Artist Reception: David Hornung

Artist Reception for David Hornung, Saturday, October 15th from 12-2pm. David Hornung creates cyanotype collages inspired by quilt makers who recycle scraps of printed fabric to construct new compositions.  Hornung is a painter and collage artist who has exhibited widely.  He is the author of Color: A Workshop for Artists and Designers (Laurence King Pub Ltd), currently inits third edition.  Hornung has held professorships at Indiana University, Skidmore College, RISD, and Adelphi University. Pulp is open Friday-Sunday 11-4pm.

Spirits and Souls of Forestdale Cemetery Tours

Guests in small groups will be led along the meandering pathways of beautiful Forestdale Cemetery.  Costumed characters will embody the spirits and souls of some of Holyoke’s remarkable citizens and tell their stories.  Monuments, Markers, Crypts and Crosses are but a few of the sights you will see on this insightful walk while learning about some facts of death and dying in the 19th century.  Tour is approximately 1 hour and take place on uneven ground at times. Gateway City Arts and Canal District Tour (with dining option available)

Join Bob Comeau for a great late afternoon tour of Gateway City Arts, formerly the historic Judd Paper Company, and the Canal District area. This tour will take place on the same day as Doors Open Holyoke - October 15th. After the tour you can enjoy a few cocktails and/or dinner at Judd's Restaurant (reservations suggested). Frederick Law Olmsted – Bringing Nature to the City

Laurence Cotton will give a visual tour of "Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr., as well as his two sons and the Olmsted Bros. landscape architecture firm, as the footprint of their works literally stretch across the entire continent of North America, with something of a focus on New England, in particular Massachusetts. The Olmsted firm worked on over 20 projects in the city of Holyoke. Laurence Cotton is a practicing public historian, and writer/producer of historical films for PBS including "Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America".
