The Carlos Vega Fund for Social Justice is awarding four mini-grants in their 12th year of funding organizations in the Holyoke area who are fighting injustice, oppression and poverty. Mayor Joshua A. Garcia, Ward 4 City Councilor Kocayne Givner and a group of community members will mark the birthday of Malcolm X with a ceremony at City Hall on Friday, May 19. Mayor Garcia will read a proclamation honoring the life and mission of Malcolm X, an American Muslim minister and human rights activist prominent during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Assassinated in 1965, he remains a highly regarded figure within African-American and Muslim-American communities for his pursuit of racial justice. The Holyoke observance will be held in the Mayor’s Office starting at 2pm.

McMahon’s 3nd Annual Plant Sale Saturday, May 20th / 10am - 2pm 75 Kane Rd, Holyoke, MA 01040   We’re excited to host our 3rd Annual Plant Sale and fundraiser for McMahon School. We have a great variety for plants this year including indoor house plants, annual vegetables, outdoor flowers, and perennial edible plants. It’s for a great cause. All the plants, pots, and soil are donated by the community and 100% of the sales goes directly to the school. As a way of remembering, honoring, and recognizing our Veterans we will be participating and challenging YOU to do 22 pushups before our Memorial Day ceremony.  An estimated 22 veterans are tragically lost to suicide every single day. The IVHF Battle of the Badges Volleyball Tournament is back for an eighth year featuring members of the New York City Fire Department going head to head with teams of emergency personnel from Holyoke, Springfield and greater New England. Join Bob Comeau as he takes us down a three-mile memory lane on Holyoke's historic Oak Street. Learn about the the history of Avery Field and its surrounding land. Enjoy walking along Oak Street as he takes you on a journey learning about the area's history, the homes and some of the early and important residents. Dress appropriately and wear comfortable shoes.
